I've been watching the weather to try to find a good window to shoot down to SF and then make it to my dad's condo in Rancho Mirage for Thanksgiving. Well, I checked to NOAA site for the past several days and finally decided that Monday was best as the I-5 corridor though WA and OR mostly had a 30% chance of rain. Yeah, right. And the high in the Siskiyous was supposed to be above freezing. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Although there were a few welcomed dry spells in WA and OR, I got soaked most of the time. Fortunately, I have gear that actually is waterproof enough to survive this sort of onslaught. But the kicker was when I got within 600-800 feet elevation of the pass in the Siskiyous and it started to SNOW! I had to ride for several miles cleaning the snow off of the outside of my shield and the fog from the snow on the inside - all while riding in nasty visibility. I ended up lifting my shield and using two fingers to wipe both sides at the same time. Don't try this at home, kids.
Amazingly, I then come down out of the Siskiyous and, once past the "Welcome to California" sign, the weather becomes miraculously clear with a nice half moon coming out and very few clouds. It was then clear and nice, although a bit on the nippy side, all of the way to San Francisco. It wasn't even foggy or rainy in SF. Very weird.
(P.S. I used to think heated grips and heated vests were for wimps - either I was wrong or I'm a wimp. I survived pretty well today because of them.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

We had 4" of snow overnight here in PA. Glad that I wasn't riding, my car couldn't even stay on the road. Needed the help of a couple of nice guys who helped push us out. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I'm a psychologist by trade
If I had the same deal as the meteorologists; I could set up a practice wherein I would screen patients who were potentially suicidal. I could be wrong enough to loose 40-65% of said patients to suicide, Get paid $110K per year and never have to worry about loosing my job. The National Weather Service is bullshit-(caused me to forgo numberous good riding days because they called for bad weather).

If you can ride in the first snow, or the right kind of snow it can actually be quite beautiful. It's almost like a wind tunnel that parts as you ride through it.
Doesn't sound like you had that kind of ride though Drake.
For the first time ever I rode with heated grips, got them hooked up last week.
It was so rad a little pee leaked out when I was riding. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Heated grips are the sh*t ... I had to upgrade mine, too. They should have been standard equipment! |

Done beautiful snow ride from the midlands to London and a fantastic ride back from Scotland in the heaving rain. You need the right bike, right gear, right lid/visor and most of all, the right attitude. _________________ Cheers,

No chit.
After spending lots of time skiing and hiking in snowy backcountry, being on a motorcycle where you can just pull off, find a room and heat/dry out ain't nuffin'. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Drake,
I took a 315 mile ride a few weeks ago (Indianapolis and back). It was 31* when I left and never got above forty something. I was warm enough but my toes sure got cold.
Looks like you have a great ride (as usual). _________________ "Still can't find 6th gear" 94 K1100LT |

I put some of those little heat pack things in the toes of my boots. They don't work exceptionally well since there isn't much fresh oxygen for them but they do make a difference. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Drake, I see you're getting pounded up there right now. If you can find a way out that doesn't involve a raft, the weather's delightful down here (comparatively speaking). Haven't tried a heated vest yet, but I couldn't cope without them toasty grips. Don't mind suffering some, as long as the hands are warm.
Send some of that water down here, will ya? _________________ "Some things I know, some things I don't"
