Saw a post over at bmwsporttouring which says that you can temporarily disable the ABS on R1100s by holding in the starter button when turning the key on. Apaarently this screws up the ABS initialization and leaves the ABS disabled until the next time you start the bike.
Anybody ever tried the technique on a K1100?
Why would I want to do this? Because in situations where you need to ride on dirt or gravel (like the downhill dirt driveway at my cabin) you're better off without ABS.
(I'd go out and try it myself but it's raining and I have a cold or flu or something and don't really feel like it.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hey Duck, never tried it on mine and not sure I would want to. I would worry about a power surge when the starter engages. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!
I like the social aspect of riding. Rally's, socializing, drinking beer, fartin' and carrying on.

My K1100 has a switch on the panel that dis-ables the ABS. Dont they all have that??? I have noticed one or two with a spot light switch as well. My three are..Heated grips, four way hazard flashers, and ABS kill.

That switch does not disable your ABS.
It's only useful for two things:
1) If your ABS if faulting, it will keep the lights from flashing for about five minutes.
2) It can be used to reset ABS faults. (In conjuction with grounding the middle pin of the diagnostic plug.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

You still have the load shedding relay in the circuit so I'm not sure if it would create a detrimental surge. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

My riders handbook says the following: (Page 16) ABS SWITCH> (Optional extra) ABS cancel button. On page 26 the switch is classed as ABS accept switch.
I was led to believe that on European models this switch cancels the ABS function in line with CE standards, but I will bow to your knowledge on this one.

All I can speak to with knowledge is US bikes. All of our US bikes have a momentary switch that does not disable the ABS and functions as I described above. I wasn't aware that Euro bikes might have an ABS cancel.
If you're a competent rider, it shouldn't be too hard to test. Hit the switch that you think disables the ABS, run the bike up to 20mph in an empty parking lot and then slam on the rear brake until the bike stops. That should let you know if it disables the ABS or not.
Disclaimer: I'm only suggesting that you do this if you're confident enough in your riding skills to do it without dumping your bike.. i.e. That you can keep a bike upright and in a straight line with the rear wheel locked. If you don't know what you're doing you can either lose the rear end to one side and lowside or, if you let off the brake before you come to a complete stop, you can highside. If you try this and crash, it's not my fault. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for that, Mr Duck. My Francis Barnett might have locked up when I used to ride stupid back in '65, but I reckon I can handle that now. Oh, and thanks for the welcome!!  |

That is a myth. Some of the early R1100GS bikes had that option but not our K-Bikes.

Drake,
You can also disable (actually, I think it's temporarily fault) the ABS by just pressing the starter button too soon after turning on the ignition.
My dealer told me when I bought the '93 (new) from him to wait one cycle of the alternating ABS lights before pressing the starter button.
Every now and again I'm in a hurry and get to see the 'fault' flashing of the ABS lights for my trouble.
It happens with ABS-I and ABS-II in my experience.
