So, have any of you experince with enlarged stock gas tanks? I
saw an LT for sale which touted an oversized gas tank. When I
questioned the owner he said someone in Texas used to make
them, but he couldn't remember who. I was directed to view Helen
of TwoWheels fame website to see a pic of her large tanked RS.

Does anyone recollect any information about these things? Shocked

Kent, those large K gas tanks were made by Ray Randolph from Lubbock, Texas. He would take 2 K gas tanks cut one in half along the side front to rear and take the midsection from the other tank and weld it in place to make a taller, larger gas tank. There will be no more made as sadly Ray passed away a few years ago.

Thanks Carl,

Sorry to hear Ray is gone, maybe I can interest another welder into
trying his hand if I locate a donor tank for cheep. It seems like a
good idea that should live on. I guess that having the 9 gal. PD tank
has spoiled me. We'll see...

Larry Fears had one of these Ray Specials, the tought thing is that welding aluminum is not easy. Might want to try the IBMWR and MOA sites for used ones until a new vendor pops up.

Good luck with the Randolph tank. From what I had heard they were rough as a cob and required alot of finishing work to make them look nice. I don't know the condition of the tank thats for sale, but you need to be aware of that while you negotiate a purchase price.

Thanks mens...

I've decided not to pursue the large tank, I find myself riding
smaller distances these days...

Back when I was looking for the uber tanker, I think it was just
a flashback to when I put a 10.5 Heinrich tank on my R80ST...

You know Johnny, a bug eyed uber tanked RS might just be the

Hell for a bit more you could get a KLR. Twisted Evil

If you need a cheap donor tank, I've got one from my parts 96 RS. Gvien the mounting differences between LT and RS frames you'll want to use the top half of the RS tank and the bottom of the LT. This tank is somewhat banged up but doesn't leak. $20 plus shipping.

Also note the K tanks are double-walled aluminum which probably won't be cheap to have one worked on.

Initially I thought that $800 figure was a lot for a tank lieke that but when you start to consider having to find someone to do it from scratch, $800 starts looking like a decent price.. And who knows, if there's no interest in that tank then you mgiht be able to talk down the price a bit.

Hmmm... I thought they were different because the frames are different - the LT has a bar down the middle and the RS has the Y.

I plan to drain and clean both of my tanks sometime this spring - I'll swap them while they're empty and see what the deal is.

I understand that there is a collar that replaces the fuel neck. This allows the tank to be "filled with fuel" I think it was a little less that a gallon added capacity.

Does anyone know where to get them?

Mark

hey Mark - there is a little flapper where you put the gas nozzle in - removal of this is called (by most of us) a flapperectomy. Basically, you take the entire assembly out, turn it over, take out 4 screws (if memory serves me), then put the gas cap back on. Gives you a little less than a gallon extra, I think. Don't know why you need a collar....

Without knowing that singularly peculiar term, I wouldn't expect you to know what to search for - so I'm searching for you. Here are a couple links:

If my CRS isn't mistaken I think that I went as far as finding the guy
who used to make those extra capacity raised filler collars you are
talking about. He (I can't remember who) told me that he made them
up for the folks who were riding hacks, & that the were no longer in
production. You might post a want one over on the IBMWR site, maybe
somone will respond... Good Luck in you search... Rolling Eyes
