I thought all you “always ride wherever you’re going” guys would enjoy berating me for this picture. Laughing It sure made the long, boring drone from Charlotte to Austin and back much more enjoyable (quicker too). Yeah, I make fun of the H-D guys towing their bikes around and especially when you see the truck/trailer following a group on a ride, but I use this rig to get to the good stuff on a regular basis. I am not ashamed! Very Happy

This is the first time I've ever seen working BMW motorcycles on a trailer.

sorry mine both have the following sticker:

IF YOU SEE THIS BIKE IN A TRUCK, PLEASE CALL 911 IT'S BEING STOLEN

IF YOU SEE THIS BIKE ON A TRAILER, PLEASE CALL 911 IT'S BEING STOLEN

If you install the cruise control on your K, then those long boring rides are a breeze - and people won't think that you're just a poser like they do now. Razz

When I was younger I felt that way about trailers, even when riding the old rigid frame Triumph chopper.

But now that I'm older, not old mind you, I have been know to do this,

to get to this

Besides even with two sidecar rigs it's difficult to get the wife, two kids, wheelchair etc etc and all the other stuff needed to a rally.

Or as one of my sidecar buddies says, why waste a perfectly good sidecar on the interstate.

It's a personality disorder. They get a motorcycle to be unigue, then find out there's lots of people with motorcycles, so then they trailer to be different. When it gets really severe they get a sidecar rig AND a trailer.

(Just kidding around, guys. Wink )

Mike, I must know what road that is! Is it in Eastern TN? Ever been on Idaho 12? It starts with the curvy road sign and states "next 72 miles"!

Well, the truck's cool. The bikes are VERY cool. The trailer... I better not say anything because one never knows - could be me one day.

But MAN I pray not!

Do you mean Lolo Pass? I think everybody who's ever ridden it has this picture: (or the one from the other end)

Yes, that's the one. I have a photo of the other end.

I've done both ways. The 1300 miles to get to the Blue Ridge area from here isn't anything to write about, especially if you just want to GET THERE!
With the trailer, you get there raring to go with pent up energy and anticipation. By the time you do two days on a superslab to get there, and face the same drone for the return trip, a trailer makes a lot of sense.
Yeah, I like the sign that says "I trailered my Harley to bike week", too, but my aging bones and muscles appreciate the softer route for something like this trip.

I was on this road daily for 10 years, in a semi. Sad

I'm with Paul & Frank on trailering. Life is too short, & some roads are
too painfully boring to not consider pulling a trailer. I've made a vow to
never ride across looong stretches of Neb. just to get to the Rocky Mtn's
again. I would rather trailer my bike to the closest large airport & park
in a long term p-lot, & then enjoy the twisty roads.

In defense of this heresy I have ridden to both the left & right coasts on
airheads with "S" bars, laying on my Harro tankbag. But then I was younger & more limber. Laughing

Paul, its not to far west of you, Hwy 421 in Shady Valley, TN near the NC border. I had ridden it years ago on the way to KY for a sidecar rally.

Last year at the Boone rally saw a t-shirt that said "Dragon Schmagon I road the Snake, US 421." So while the wife and youngest son went shopping in Boone, the oldest son and I rode the snake. He took the picture from the sidecar.

Haven't made it to Idaho (yet)

This is heresy. If you must trailer at least buy a Harley and:

1. Do it properly
2. Save embarasment for the rest of us.

One shouldn't be ashamed. For me, "riding there" needn't be a badge of manhood or anything. But I still have not found a road so boring that it would not be more boring in a cage.

Of course, seasonal conditions affect the decision to ride. I hauled mine in the back of a pick-up from Seattle to South Dakota when I purchased it in early March 06 - couldn't see the sense in trying to get across the northern Cascades and Rockies with one-wheel drive during that time of year. If I'd have had the time I may have tried the coastal - I-40 route.

Again, one day physical limitations brought on by age may affect my view on the subject. But for now, no paved road is unworthy of my traverse.

When I assumed command in Seattle in 2002, I only wanted a BMW because there was so much right there and so I kept my bike there and, when I could, took advantage of the venue.

When I left command, we had the great ride back to El Paso, but it was nice to have a trail vehicle for the group.

Now I'm stuck in El Paso and, while Phil may disagree, there's a lot of nothing between here and interesting places, especially when you're 63.

So to keep enjoying the bike (even though it's now a K12LT) I've acquired a truck (2003 F150 Supercab with towing package) and this trailer http://www.diamondctrailers.com/trailers/custom-motorcycle-bike-trailers-economy-46ct-l10.htm so that I can join my Seattle friends (and my Phoenix friends and my Austin friends and my Wisconsin family) without boring myself to death getting there.

Both the truck and the trailer were great deals (as was the K12); given that the trailer holds two, I wish--for that and other reasons--that I'd kept the K11

I'll do all the above if you can ride a K11 -ONCE- down our 1/3 mile private dirt road in the Spring. For the two months of Springtime, nothing that is not 4 wheel drive gets to the paved town road through 6"-12" deep mud. For this, I have a trailer and need to drive a few miles to find a place to park the truck/trailer combo. Sorry if what I do offends anyone, but without a trailer I can't ride before June.

And I'll drive a Yugo before riding a Harley.

John
