I am asking on behalf of another UK Biker who doesn't use the internet.
He has a very late K100LT on which the fuel gauge failed. The gauge was disconnected and he relied upon the fuel level warning light now this has failed as well. I know the K100 and K1100 are different but the fuel sender units should be similar

In technical words that I can understand, have you any idea how the fuel level light works and what does he need to fix it?

He has tried to get a replacement fuel sender unit from Motorworks in UK which I know some of you already know for BMW spares, but because used ones proved top be unreliable they have stopped selling used ones and have had a number of new ones made.

Before he spends out on a new/non BMW one is there anything else that could be causing the problem? All I can think of may be the connector from the main wiring loom to the back of the sender unit. As far as I am aware the fuel circuits are working and it starts & runs OK. Not much to go on I know but other sets of brains could help.

Cluster light: Fuel level sender grounds the white wire to the instrument cluster with 5-ish liters left. There is delay circuitry in the cluster so that it doesn't go on for a little while. If the delay circuitry were not there then the light would flash on and off when the fuel level goes up and down as fuel sloshes around in the tank when riding.

Fuel gauge: Yellow wire. 0-ish ohms to ground when full. 110-ish ohms to ground when empty.

If the cluster fuel light is not working then it is possible that the bulb has gone bad.
