OK folks- this is not for my K bike. My recently acquired oil head Boxer Cup has some oil weeping around the sight glass.
While I have read that K bikes can exist with weepy glass for some time, two 550cc pistons put out more crankcase pressure than four 250/275cc pistons. And considering the present worldwide situation, a rapid glass blow out, the oiled rear tire and possible crash is not something that I want now.
I searched the tech archives and found one thread from OTG (the big guy) that pretty much addressed this removal and install. 2008!
https://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5439&highlight=sight+glassside
note: one of the more descriptive posts was from Phil Marvin. Newer members might have seen his posts but he is no longer with us.
So does anyone have more input on the removal and replacement? The replacement just arrived from BeemerBoneyard.

On this one I'm like Ray Charles at the Louvre... not a clue. The only sight glass I have replaced was on the tail of my 1965 Italian 15 meter glider, put there to make sure the elevator mechanism was properly engaged. The kind of thing that could REALLY ruin your day. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Would it be worth a phone call to a Max mechanic? Just a thought.
Or heaven forbid.... a boxer forum. _________________ Ride safe.

Can't remember where but I have heard that drilling a hole in the middle of the old one and then using a corkscrew is an effective removal method if you're replacing it.

Mad Dog. Holy cow. Flashback to 1979, broke-ass Marine, hit the liquor store and that's all I could afford, next I know I'm sitting next to a telephone pool doing a perfect impression of the little girl in The Exorcist. FD and Chuck, thanks for the help.
I have to check but hopefully the one in there is original (plastic) and I can drill it and pull or just break it. Obviously I need to take care to not damage the seating surface.
The new ones like what just arrived from BB are glass.
Yeah Chuck, the left cam chain tensioner is on the list. The one on it is original (17mm hex head). _________________ John & Cathy

OK now. This is a copy of my post over on ADVrider, in the "What did you do in your garage today". I'm sure that some sight glasses come out easily- not mine. I think that the clutch job on my previous K1100RS had less x-rated language involved.
Anyway- here ya' go. If anyone here needs to do one in the future, I wish them well......

Yesterday I had the (dis)pleasure of replacing the sight "glass" on my recently obtained '03 Boxer Cup. The existing (OEM) one was weeping a bit and I wanted to avoid a possible blow out at highway speed.
Royal PITA to get the old one out. I had watched several videos on how to do it and read several write ups too. Looked reasonably easy.
Well 2+ hours later I had the old one out. Cleaned up the mounting surfaces and 5 minutes later the new one was in place.
Not fun- here is the wreckage.
Now the new.
Yeah, it is really dirty in there- just had the bike for a month or so. Clean up is coming. _________________ John & Cathy

I have seen the glass removed using a soldering iron to melt a hole through the glass and then a suitable bar / screwdriver to lever the old sight glass out. Benefit of no bits of plastic falling inwards.....? _________________ It's not the size of the dog in a fight, it's the size of fight in the dog. |
