Is there an authoritative source for manufacture dates for K1100LT's? My title says my bike was first *registered* in 1995, but I need to know when it was manufactured at the factory. It seems that in some cases the 1995 models were manufactured in 1994 for the 1995 model year, but I can't tell for sure because I can't find a database that has that info. Anybody know?

I just checked my registration document and it appears my 1995 may have actually been manufactured in October of 1991! German vehicle paperwork does not list model year, it lists date of first registration. But there is another field that looks like it shows the date of manufacture. That jives with my Honda Lead 125 scooter where the first registration says 1987 but the other field shows a date in 1983. 1987 was the last year it was sold, and it is not possible to find shop manuals dated after 1983.

Is this something common to BMW as well? Could they have manufactured and stockpiled assembled K1100LT frames, engines, etc. and then finished them with accessories and other dealer-requested components as much as four years later?

Isn't the date of manufacture on the data plate? On my R bike it lists month/year. I thought the K bikes did as well, since there are mid year model changes and you need it.

I also remember a VIN decoder, anyone have a link?

DoM should be on the sticker on the frame - along with other pertinent data.

Model year and date of manufacture won't be the same - early '95 models would be manufactured late '94.

Here's a good VIN decoder for BMW http://bimmer.work/

I'll go look at my sticker, but that website is weird. It says my bike was made in Spartanburg, South Carolina, not Germany!

Probably just a US centric website... or an oversight on someone's part...

Other than that, did it have the info you wanted?

Try this one (also a good part number lookup): https://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/select?product=M&archive=0

I had a really sweet app that gave a lot more info about the bikes - but it got dropped with some update. I'll have to fire up the old 4 and see if the app still works.

I'm getting conflicting info, so I sent a query to the plant in Spartanburg. They are checking on it for me.

There are other things that don't match so I will wait until the folks at Spartanburg finish looking into this.

If someone could take a picture of the DOT label/sticker on their K1100LT that would help me see if mine has it. Yes, I know where I should be looking more or less but it helps if I can see *what* I am looking for.

That one doesn't report place of manufacture, but it does have details in a different way from the US site, especially the options.

Thank you. I'll check it tomorrow, but I am not very hopeful.

My import issue is resolved. By the time the bike arrives with the rest of my household goods it will be 25 years old, so it is exempt from both DOT and EPA rules.
