Gidday Folks,

Yes I done a similar thing but mounted to the crash bars, these are also Cree LED lights from ebay but mine were square in shape with one spot light being a spread beam and the other a pencil beam, I don't plan on riding at night much as it was done to be noticed on dull crappy, single lane, country road days, although no doubt the night riding would be easier with these.
I had the auto electrician wire them in as I am useless with wiring but I only wanted them to work on a separate switch, they are not connected to my low/high headlight switch at all, I wanted them on all the time and I have they pointing down slightly so as to be noticed but not piss off oncoming drivers and my mate rode along in front of me on his R100rs and said that they were great and stood out well but did not blind him, but very noticeable

While I was at it I also purchased and had installed the Beaver relay from japan which certainly made the high / low headlight a little brighter and my next thing is to upgrade the headlight bulb as it is still running the original type..

This picture below is low beam only

This picture below is high beam and spots

Many thanks

Is there a reason these can't be wired so the headlight switch also controls the led's?

No, but if you're going to do that I would recommend powering the LEDs through a relay. Trigger the relay's 86 terminal from the White/Yellow wire of the right combo switch.

So get the power from the alarm system, run it through the relay to the lights, and trigger the relay from the white/yellow wire in the switch?

Ok. What I am going to do is order one of Jim Davis' kits and piggyback on that for maximum lighting effect.

I just realized I can't use one of Jim's kits because he does not take into account that European K1100's do not have full time headlights. In the combo switch on the right hand side there is a switch to select headlight, parking light or no lights.

I have a Euro switch on the K11 - and an Eastern Beaver relay kit for the headlight. I don't understand why you can't use the relay kit for additional lighting. You want your additional lighting to turn on with the headlight?

There are two issues. One is the power. The kit only has one main power wire. Putting it on the headlight combo switch on the right kinda goes against the whole idea of not putting too much current on the factory wiring. But not putting it there means the switch becomes useless, not what I want. I would have to add a third relay to provide the main power to the hi/lo relays on the way to the buib.

And yes, I only want the Cree LED lights to come on when the headlight is powered, not when the parking light or OFF positions are selected.

So what's the problem.
The relay kit "power" lead should be fused and connect to the battery, or any other available power circuit.
The relay trigger lead(this is not the power supply lead), then connects to the headlight lead(either high or low). Thus it will only activate when the headlight is on, the euro on/off switch will still do it's function as intended. The relays will still work, if the high beam is powered then your relay would be powered(provided you connected to the high beam lead), if you turn off the headlight at the right bar switch, then the led's turn off when the headlight turns off.

I'd just look on ebay for an aux lighting kit with a relay.

"Rolling your own" really isn't that hard either.

Again, I want the LED light to operate when the headlight is on, not just on high or low. I'll get a third relay.

Here's your answer.... Just what you want. LED's on with any headlight high/low setting and off when the headlight is off.

The current for the lights does not go through the switch after you install the relay - that's the whole point - or almost the whole point. The undersized wiring also causes voltage drop. The handlebar switch triggers the relay - current goes from the battery through the relay to the lights.

You'll find the stock headlight is brighter when you install larger wires and get more current to the bulb.

You don't need 3 kits.

I bought the parts a few weeks ago and did the upgrade myself, including the two 10 watt LED lights. I wired the LED lights to work from the low beam power but I got it wrong, they light up with the high beam, but I like it better that way.
