Got me a set of Michelin tires for my K today, 400km before pulled from a bike that apparently gave up the ghost. $50 with shipping for both. I'll be sending those home with the bike when I move from Germany in a few months. Smile

I would be checking the date code on those before mounting.

Those things are very strict in Germany. Selling expired tires is highly illegal for anything except recycling and would get the user banned from eBay.

Good to hear.

But in Germany what constitutes "expired"? Is it a certain period of time after manufacture or ?

For new tires, three years is the rule.

For trailer tires, they must be changed every six years.

Tire tread less than 4mm means the tire must be changed no matter what. Same for cracks, etc.

I wouldn't put anything but radials on a K1100LT. (Or any of my other K bikes.)

The handling is SO much better.

Can't do that in Germany unless you want to fail the bi-annual inspection. The registration shows the approved tires and you have to stick to that. If you put different tires on, you have to show an approval by TUV or DEKRA that says the different tires have been tested and are approved for the vehicle.

I can only do this after I bring the bike to the US. But I won't turn down a great deal on a set of tires that fit because of that. Smile

Don't know what you mean by "darkside."

Some folks who ride big heavy bikes (Goldwings, Harley full dressers, etc), especially those who do big distances mount automobile tires on their rear wheels. They call that "darkside".

Instead of 8000 to maybe 10,000 miles on a motorcycle tire, a car tire on a heavy motorcycle will last 2, 3 or 4 times more before wearing out.

While it seems like it would not work very well or cause bad handling, it actually does work pretty good. Some of the folks who compete in the Iron Butt Rally (11 days going 9 to 12 thousand miles) use them.

I did mount one on my '09 R1200RT for one summer and had no handling or other problems. I took it off to do a track day since they probably wouldn't allow it.

To take this a step further, some do "double darkside", mounting a car tire on the rear and a rear bike tire on the front running it in the reverse rotation.

Very Happy Very Happy

Hi guys,,,
" flybd5" is right on about either TÃœV or DEKRA, ( the obligatory inspection agencies) there is NO flexibility in approved tires,,,ie: you install what the mfg says or your bike/car will be declared "unroadworthy" and your plakette removed. Ie: no ride and no drive.! For an auto even the slightest speck of rust, say on the rocker panels, will open up and most likely result in rejection! No rusted out old jalopies in Germany.

Ride safe all,,,the GREAT autumn riding is here!!!
