Noticed it when trying out the machine before buying it, said to my self "I'll find that". Haven't yet. Doesn't sound like coming from the engine (8500 miles, yes 8500, 1993!) but does sound like metal on metal.
Muffler shroud fine, exhaust system bolts fine and tight.
Louder going up through the 3700 rpm range than going down.
If you stay at about 3700, seems to go away, or at least lessen.
Thanks.

Any ideas?

I'd check the monkey nuts for the alternator.....if they are bad/gone, you can have metal on metal noise there.

My last K1100 had what I would term as a 'Sweet Spot' around the RPM you mention. Above or below that the motor wan't as smooth as around 3600-4000 and this a nice cruising speed on Autobahn or Motorways, far less tiring.

Throttle body synch often cures much of the buziness in 4 cylinder K bikes.

Finally found the annoying buzz/vibe yesterday, it was the right factory horn, drilled the hole in the flat stock mount a tad larger and used a new nut and lock washer. Much better now.
