I need some advice about tire repair. At the end of last season, I put the bike in to the shop to have a fuel leak fixed, and asked them to look at a slow leak in the rear tire. This set of tires are Michelin and have 568 miles on. He finds a piece of metal debris in the tread and quotes me a set of two new tires. Shocked I told him to air it up and I would come and get it.

The question I have is should I: a) pull the debris, plug the hole and ride away. b) find a tire repair shop to repair the tire with a patch. c) replace that tire. d) replace both tires.

Thanks for the tire wisdom. Steve

How big is the piece of metal? I'd be tempted to have the tire patched from inside. Unless it's an long or big hold a patch is the deal. Not a fan of plugs except for road side repairs.

How old are the tires? Might be why they were quoting two new tires.

Why 2 new tires? Worst case just replace the damaged tire Your option "C".

IMHO, I would not want to ride on a tire that was patched.

By the way, where in NH are you?

TWO new tires? I'd never go to that shop again.

I'd ride on an internal patch done by pros if it's not a big gash and was just a slow leak.

I've never had a roadside plug (Safety Seal brand - recommended by Shogs) fail on me.

I've done internal patches and ridden with no worries.
Like Duck, I'd do a plug to get me home, but not much longer.

I'm thinking like Chuck, what is the date stamping on them.
Anything older than 6 years I would consider replacing.

Are they showing signs of weather checking in the sidewalls?

The tires are virtually new, that's the tough part about having to replace one. Installed end of '17 season.

The debris seems to be a large staple, like roofing maybe?

I think he quoted two tires because the Michelin isn't Bavarian Korrect, and if he put a new tire of a different brand on the back, they ought to match.

John, I'm in Brentwood down south.

The matching tires thing is a myth perpetuated by people who sell tires.

(But of course you shouldn't mix radically different tires like an off road tire with a street tire though.)

Or mix a radial and non-radial.

I've run different brands for years.... For the LT's it's not easy to find radial tires in stock sizes from the same manufacturer or same model line of tires.

If it's a staple, you have two small holes. Patch it from inside (have it done at a tire shop) and if it holds air for a week you are good to go.

I certainly wouldn't do it on a K but there's a few bikes that run a radial/bias mix from the factory. F650s did back in the 90s.

Ok, what I hear you saying is the safest way is to replace the tire. Which is what I did.

Thx!
