Hi All

So i got the hoses and the pins (Fully hammeroutable).

And then when i took the old pads out i found that the face of one of the pistons has a hole in it.

Just looking for some advice here. Replace? Ignore?

Also, when i started looking at how to fit the hoses there's a bit like on a car where it goes into a metal line that looks to go under the tank.

I haven't checked the Clymer book of lies yet but i'm wondering if i should replace that part too since it looks like the tank is coming off to get at it?

Advice much appreciated chaps.

As far as the piston goes, it should not have a hole in it.
A full rebuild kit(if you can get one) should come with new pistons.

As far as brake lines go, you will most likely have to move the tank to reach the adapter fitting. You should be able to just slide it rearward without having to disconnect the fuel lines.

From that fitting it is all metal lines to the ABS unit and back.

Found a couple of piston kits but the're wild pricey.

Another option is to replace the caliper i guess.

Or at least get another rh caliper from a breaker and use the piston out of it.

The rh one on my bike is very sticky. The two bottom pistons pump out ok but pushing them back in was almost impossible.

Does the RS caliper fit does anybody know?

Like this one:

I've done that before. Just bought a spare caliper and made one decent one out of two.

Hi

Thanks for all the info.

I found a caliper service kit here:

https://james-sherlock.co.uk/shop/k75-k100-k1100-k1200/brakes-336/caliper-parts-884/caliper-rebuild-kits-341/caliper-repair-kit-1406-detail

But i have yet another question! On the motorworks site it says they don't recommend splitting these calipers because they might warp and then leak. Just wondered what you folks thought about it cause I've never heard of that happening before. I've also never serviced a caliper without splitting and i'm guessing it might be a real faff.

I'd honestly say that it is a crap shoot when you are talking about splitting them.
I have done mine and not split them.

The risk being, if you split it and it then leaks afterwards, you don't have much choice but to replace it..... defeats the purpose of a rebuild kit...

Interesting.

How did you do it?

I don't have a compressor or anything so i'd be relying on the caliper being connected to the hose to push the pistons out.

Ah, yeah I have an air compressor so it made it much easier to do.

As long as you are replacing the pistons, no harm in using a pair of pliers to grab the old pistons to remove them.

Ok so I did the caliper service without splitting and it was actually not much more difficult.

Used a g clamp and a block of wood to isolate each piston. Pumped one out, removed old seals, cleaned grooves, new seals in followed by piston. No probs.

The thing that made it awkward was having to remove the top of the fluid reservoir and refill after each piston. But it didn't use much fluid really. I'd do it this way in future now that I know.

Still haven't done the hoses. Hopefully do that if it doesn't rain tomorrow.

Hi

Finally got it all done.

Bike going quite well. What a motor it has!

Couple more issues but I'll post separate for them.

Thanks for all the help. This bike is a step up in mechanical work from an old xt!

Thanks for the suggestion Al. I'd already got mine from goodridge. That's where I've always got them before.

I'm in Belfast!
