Hello all, recently resurrected my 1997. Went through and did several things while replacing the clutch. I am noticing a knocking sound. Any advice/ideas?
Thanks in advance

Mine does that as well, but only when it's cold. by the time the needle on the temp gauge begins to move the knock is gone. Mine has done this for a couple years, before and after a clutch replacement. 111,856 miles, runs fine. I'm not going obsess about it. YMMV. Cheers! |

Mine is doing that same knocking sound, but only when at idle, when you rev or ride it goes away. Any other thoughts please?
Thanks

Sounds normal to me. These bikes are noisy - there's a lot going on down there. _________________ Jim

If it sounds like "a box of rocks" at idle then that is "normal."
Another good reason to wear earplugs. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

With earlier K100 bikes and to some degree K75 bikes the knock at idle speed can usually be ironed out and made inaudible by carefully balancing the injectors.
The contributor who said it disappeared when the engine was warm is a factor that suggests this may be the case. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

My Bike 1995 LT was off the road for a while when I had overheating issues, but I don't ever recall it being that rattly or knocking that much, one guy here suggested its the rubbers in the monkey nuts, is that such a thing?
Cheers

Yes that can be a cause of knocking but the noise at idle speed and a little above is more like a worn out cam chain tensioner.
The 'monkey nuts are the actual rubber shock absorbers in the alternator drive train and after a time they can start the break up. Also if the drive vanes that power the alternator (through the 'monkey nuts') become unscrewed from the actual drive out of the gearbox even by a couple of turns you get the same affect/noise. It is a simple repair providing the vanes or the drive cup are not damaged.
Because of the high temperatures the drive cup has to endure when retightening the retaining bolt you should use a high temperature, high strength form of thread lock and always torque the nut to the recommended setting _________________ 1997 K1100LT

So If it is a worn cam chain tensioner, is it like my Japanese bikes that it can be adjusted further or is it a case of a total new bottom adjuster?
Cheers

The tension blades do wear out on a 'K' series bike like the 75.100,1100 and 1200's flat 3 or 4 multicylinder bikes but the cam chain running permanently in an oil bath will last at least 150,000 miles but the tensioner may be changed 3 times in the life of the bike.
I changed the one on my last K75 at 66K miles and the chain had not stretched at all but the long tensioner was toast with the slipper blade worn down to the metal base.
I cannot say or quote anything about the longevity of Japanese bikes, some are better then others, but I have hear about more snapping camchains on the Japanese bikes than BMW's. Honda had an awful problem in the late 1970's early 1980's due to bad design. You have to take each design/make in context and follow the directions on maintenance given by the manufacturer. _________________ 1997 K1100LT
