My bike seems to run very rich, when starting and idling it smell like an old school carburetor with the choke full on, after one tank of fuel, the exhaust is black and I'm not getting the economy of what is indicated on this forum, is there a method of making the bike run leaner?

Cheers
Lou

It has an O2 sensor and should adjust itself. Did it just start this? Has it not been running in a while?

If your referring to the O2 Sensor in the exhaust, the Australian model doesn't have one, and no it didn't just start it's been doing it for the last 18 years?

Cheers

Why are you idling the bike? K bikes do run rich at idle.

If you read the owners manual it recommends starting the bike and riding off immediately. If you're starting the bike and letting it idle to warm up then you are doing it wrong and could be fouling the plugs.

Hi Duck,
I know what your saying about warming it up, but I can be riding open roads then come into a town and stop at traffic lights and get that waft of rich fuel passing me as i come to a halt, in fact you can smell a rich sort of fuely smell on my jacket, as if it swirls behind me while I'm riding.

Cheers

It MIGHT be a faulty temp sensor.

What year is your K11?

My K1100lt smells just like yours .My clothes and my hair the same. Its annoying, and i dont know if its fixable

I have also a black exhaust, and no oxygen sensor

But fuel economy is briliant, and plugs seems very healthy.

Whilst I have the bike apart, are you talking about the temp sender that is in the T junction of the block where one hose goes to the top left radiator and the other hose goes to the thermostat or the one at the bottom of the water pump?

The 1st one you mentioned. In the manifold bolted to the top of the block.

The other one under the water pump is for the dash gauge.

Is it possible to indentify a faulty temp sensor without measure it?
Are there any issues except the bad smell?

I was under the impression that the Temp sensor was purley for the Thermo Fan, but is it also to give the ECU on how to run, temperature wise? The Thermo fan does cut in as it should.

As Africanos asked, Is there a method of testing it?
Cheers

Yes that is correct, the sensor is wired to the ECU to control fuel mixture and the fan as well.

The only way I know to test the accuracy is to measure it with an OHM meter. Place it in a container of water knowing the water temperature and then measuring the resistance. If you heat up the water, you can measure how it changes with the change in water temp.(if you leave the water in the refrigerator overnight it should allow you to test/measure the major portion of the sensor range)

I think a good place to start is checking the ohms between pins 7 and 14 when the bike is at ambient temperature.
