Is there anyone out there who has a cure for this problem ?
On connecting the battery, the clock springs into action and happily starts winding in minutes through the 24 hour clock, but on turning the ignition on, I get no lights on the dash, no fuel pump whirring, no gear indicator and the clock goes blank. . . . totally dead.
There's no response from any switches, buttons or shifting gears . . . nothing. Ignition off . . the clock reappears, zeroed.
The bike has been off the road for 3 months and the battery has been in the house, regularly connected to a CTEK conditioner. It's showing 12volts on my meter, so I'm confident that the Motobatt is OK.
I'd appreciate any advice as to where to start troubleshooting this one please.
Thanks,
Nick
Hi Scott
Many thanks for the really quick response, I'm happy to say that the solution didn't involve any of those suggestions.
It was actually the kill switch.
I had read somewhere (possibly on this forum) about the kill switches on the K's being very troublesome and as luck would have it, I have another K1100 in my shed as a non-runner. After a bit of a struggle with the wiring loom I swapped out the right hand switch cluster and temporarily refitted the tank, battery and Motronic unit.
Turned the key and immediately the fuel pump buzzed away, so nothing for it . . . I tried the starter . . the old girl fired up first pull !
She's happily ticking over out there in the sun.
Once again thanks for the very useful advice, I think I'd better get a spare kill switch !

Sounds like you have either:
1. bad battery
2. bad/dirty battery connections
3. bad cable
You need to connect a voltmeter at the battery terminals and measure the voltage while you turn on the key. If the meter stays at 12v, yet the bike appears dead, look for a bad connection or bad cable.
If the voltage drops way low at the battery terminals, you have a dead battery. You might be able to recharge it, though if you had it on a tender as you say, it may be bad. _________________ Ride safe.

I thought I had fixed this . . .
The bike hasn't been running for about a month, but the battery has been in the house regularly connected to the CTEK conditioner.
Put the battery back in the bike, switched on . . . all fine (I had checked engine oil etc.) and pressed the start with a bit of choke.
A big click emanated from the relay box and all the dash lights died. Fiddled with all switches . . nothing. Even the clock was blank.
Switched off . . the clock comes back. Checked the sidestand switch . . rocked it in gear . . nothing.
The same fault has come back.
I've had an epic 3 hour battle getting the starter motor out (ABS 2 !), to clean and check it, the brushes are worn but not excessively . . so I'm going to replace them anyway.
I'm completely stumped by this . . . can anyone help ? _________________ Nick

Have you checked the fuses? Sounds like something might be shorting. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

It sure sounds like a power supply problem.
If the clock is going blank, then you are loosing your power at the main distribution.
Measure with your meter at the battery when you turn on the ignition switch and the clock goes blank.
With just the key on, you should have +12v at the battery, when the starter is engaged you could read as low as +7-8vdc at the battery.
Anything less than that, and you have a week battery. Trying to start a K bike with a week battery can lead to a damaged start relay, as the contacts can weld together. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks for that Scott
I've got the starter and the alternator out at the moment (as well as that bloody stupid ABS 2 pump) . . . so I'll have to wait to carry out those tests. I've tested the starter relay and it clatters happily when 12v is applied across the plug contacts, so that appears OK.
I've just ordered some new starter motor brushes, so I'll be slapping it all together once they've turned up.
Just a thought . . could the fault be on the ignition switch ? I've read that it does strange things. _________________ Nick

The ignition switch can do funky things related to engine functions, but killing the clock display and restoring it, is not one of them. _________________ Ride safe.
