I test rode my k1100rs today for the first time. I received this bike as a pile of parts I had to assemble having never observed what this bike rode like assembled. Whilst riding it I noticed a noise emitting from the final drive area. The noise is a humming sound and is not coninuous(it goes hum hum hum hum). The noise is present at all speeds and will get faster or slower depending on speed. Any ideas?

1st thing that came to my mind is tire road noise, but its more likely a bearing in the final drive. How many miles.
Have you checked the final drive fluid. Might consider changing it if you haven't yet.

I found the problem. It was the tire rubbing against the large zip tie I placed on my swingarm to secure the abs sensor cable. There was good clearance when the bike was on it's center stand but when I put weight on the tire it expanded just enough for the cut tip on the tie to come into contact with the labels on the tire wall.. I guess we all need to laugh at ourselves sometimes. I took her out for 20 min with no hums to be heard.

That brings up another issue to keep in your mind, if you change tire sizes. A wider tire may fit, until, as you have found, put weight on it or it heats up and expands, it may begin to rub.

I just love that.
I got tyre guy to put cranked valve on back tyre.
He tightened it up and this clacking noise started.
He got a bit of a fright......thought it was something serious.
Just turned valve away from caliper Laughing
