been searching around the forum for a bit to see if anyone has had this issue, but none seem exactly the same. i have not ridden my 96 k1100rs for a few months due to the constant rain we have had. when i parked it, everything was just fine. yesterday i went to start it up and i heard a high pitch whine. everything else seemed fine, it idled and accelerated fine. it was low on gas so i went up to the gas station and filled it up. i then drove to work and about 2 miles in it began to stall anytime i tried to accelerate. i was able to start it and drive it a couple more miles to work and i thought it was a fluke. after work it did the same thing. now when i turn the key i hear the pump engage, then it starts fine, idles fine and you can even rev it with no issue but then slowly the fuel pump whine starts in and increases in volume and then when you rev it it bogs down and stalls.
i read that the fuel pump whine is common and seems like a lot of people live with it, that is, if its just noise and not a faulty fuel pump.
i guess what i am getting at is where is a good starting point for fixing it?

Check the folded seam on the filter, if it leaks it would make a sound like that.
It was a big batch of bad filters made many years ago, I did get one of them.

I'm with Inge on this. Even if not one of the bad ones, it does sounds like a filter issue. If everything is still original in the tank you could have the pump vibration damper ring turning to goo plus a hole in the prefilter/sock allowing said goo to make a whiny fuel pump even whinier as it strangles it to death.

They are loud for sure, especially with a lower fuel level allowing it to resonate. One of the few dislikes I have about the bike.

Filter to.
I had stalling problems and power loss quite suddenly.
Changed the in line filter and all was well.
I'd try easy option first.

Stalling issue was the filter. There was an inch long crack in it. Replaced it with another one that came with the spare parts from the previous owner. Looks new but I'm not sure. Runs fine now but the whine is still there which didn't exist before.

Dump a bottle of Techron injector cleaner in the tank before you fill up - see if that helps. Can't hurt.

The stock fuel pumps on these bikes do whine. There was a time when these bikes had a nic-name of "k-whiners", and as Niemand has mentioned above the whine will get louder as the fuel level gets lower.
Nature of the beast.
If it really bothers you, you could replace the pump with the alternative "ford" replacement.
