|
|
Hi guys,
I was just hoping for some advice. Close to where I live there is a guy parting out an old LT, and I was thinking about buying some parts 'just in case'. I was wondering what would you guys recommend on taking? What goes wrong most often? or what's the hardest thing to find?
I was thinking of getting the throttle cable, injectors, maybe the transmission, maybe the ecu? TPS?
I have an RS so no body work, and I've already done the water pump...what would you look for?
Thanks,
drive safe and regards from Bohemia, _________________ ----------------------------------------------------------

Hello, Dixie.
**All assuming both bikes are matching as far as year changes to 2V vs. 4V, ABS1, etc**
Don't bother with the control cables. The LT will have slightly longer versions than your RS, in addition to the fact that you might as well put in fresh ones when replacing. (I replaced my old ones with new and kept the originals as spares)
If the guy is selling at very low prices, I would suggest concentrating on anything you might eventually rebuild in order to do so prior to taking parts off of your bike.
Forks and Master Cylinders come to mind.
The same goes for the ABS 1 control module. If it is a match, then I for one would appreciate having a spare on hand even if just a core to use when sending off to be rebuilt.
The ECU is a good idea if the part numbers match. I am not sure if there would be any problems, but just wanted to mention the LT can have a slightly different version, however, so be sure to check.
Possibly the drive shaft.
I would love to have a spare transmission sitting around, but not sure if it would ever be needed.
I'd also say wheels, but again the LT and RS are different unfortunately.
Aside from a right foot peg plate that was surprisingly difficult to find (yours will be different than my '94 and probably more abundant), I have not had any issues finding parts when needed. Therefore I would only stock up on spares if this guy was selling very inexpensively.
Sadly/Fortunately here in the US, whole bikes can be had for relatively little money currently. So spending a bundle on spares doesn't make much sense at the moment. Your situation in CZ may be vastly different, granted. _________________ Niemand

If you have the space to store it, I'd take the whole bike. Part it out on your time, list and sell any LT only part on eBay, and clean, bag, and store anything you might need later. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

The Hall sensor for one. They are a horrendous price new. All 4 cyl K bikes use the same sensor.
The seats are interchangable as well, even if you don't like the profile of the padding they can always be modified, but a good base is always worth having.
Coils and Ign leads perhaps
How about the clocks (speedo/tacho, fuel gauge and temp gauges.) I think even the fuel tanks are the same.
Headlight glass and reflector, the list is endless _________________ 1997 K1100LT
