|
|
Hi All,
New to the K11's and have been lurking for a bit. I have recently acquired a 93 K1100RS. I have noticed that the front lever does not completely return to the full out position. If I push it out with my fingers it does go back but not on its own. Brakes work well and I don't feel anything strange. Fluid looks clean but I will flush some new fluid through.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

You need to pull the pivot pin and lube things up a bit.
Not as easy as it sounds though.
Locate the Allen head of the pivot pin on the underside of the master cylinder.
Use a good Allen wrench fully seated in that head. It will be hard to turn (if memory serves, BMW used strong Loctite on that so it doesn't loosen and fall out) so you want the Allen wrench as deep into the head as possible so you don't strip the head and cause yourself more woes.
Once it reaches the end of the threads it will not fall right out so you may need to work it a bit to get it the rest of the way out.
Then clean it up, put some fresh lube on it and reinstall it but don't overtighten it when putting it back in. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Yes indeed. I spent some time trying to find the best and snuggest fitting Allen wrench I had in the tool box. Unfortunately it was all for not since the bolt stripped anyways. It was not budging.
SO I have spritzed my best penetrant in the pivot and hope for the best.
Anyone have an extra master brake assembly?
Thanks,

I've seen references to pounding a Torx bit into a stripped Allen head to get the bolt out.
Do you have any Easy-Outs on hand? That might also work. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Those bolts seem too be made of the best quality german cheese However easy-outs worked for me, with a little bit of cautious drilling. _________________ David, owner of:

This may be due to a different reason. I had a R1100RT which has the same basic front brake master cylinder and \i had this problem where it was not returning enough to close off the brake light switch.
After investigation this turned out to be a build up of corrosion inside the master cylinder that was making the friction too great to allow the lever to return. You may well find (as I did) you will also have replace the seals after cleaning out the cylinder _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I had the same problem with my '96RS. I got used to pushing the brake lever back out with the back of my index finger so that the brake light would go off.
I ultimately replaced all of the the original rubber brake lines with braided stainless.
Once the new lines were properly bled, problem solved. _________________ '20 R1250RS - The RS

When I bought my K1100RS in Malibu and rode it home up the coast it had this sticking brake lever issue. It was quite handy as a "hill holder" at stop lights on the hilly streets of San Francisco.
(I resolved it by pulling and re-lubing the pivot pin.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hill holder. Good one Drake.
Great place for that. _________________ John & Cathy
