Ernie - you think the ice will melt in time for you to get to HM?
A bit chilly up your way - hope you're staying warm. _________________ Jim

Yeah Ernie, we are iced in also. But yesterday it was 50 here.
Goofy winters for the last few years. If you remember it snowed 2 years ago on the day I was to leave for HM. This picture was the Tuesday before HM9
Hopefully the frozen north will thaw by late March. _________________ John & Cathy

Hi guys.....
Sure, we'll all make it to HMSP, but the "starts" often make for a first day chilly ride. I remember the snow of two years ago and can remember many times riding to HMSP over Mt. Killington and Mt.Pico when the roadway was dangerously icy and the ski slope parking lots were still full with cars and early morning skiers. One year, I decided to go the southern route through Brattelboro and then up/over the Hogback to Albany...only to be turned back by an unpassable iced-over mountainous Rt.9...
Maybe "one day" I'll get smart and either move south, or get an all season MC-trailer and simply take the "clean/dry" eastern Interstates,,,but then I think, motorcycles are for riding not trailering,,,so the sometimes questionable and/or dangerous riding conditions just keep me all the more vigilant..!
Still I hope we all have a SAFE RIDE no matter how we get there...! It will be truly great to see all you guys again,,

So, spent part of the warm three day weekend pulling the body work and tank off the R bike, replaced all of the rubber lines inside and outside of the tank, and then a test ride today with no leaks. Did an oil change since I had the stuff. My fuel leak was in the line that goes from the drain on the fuel cap, the rubber line INSIDE the tank before it connected to the fitting on the fuel pump plate. I also found some really scary wiring with no insulation from the plate to the fuel pump so I unsoldered them and heat shrunk the power wires.
On my list of things to do is adjust the valves (bought the set of 4 feelers), replace the left side cam tensioner with the new/improved part, flush the brake fluid and replace all the brake pads.
Depending on work and a Disney Cruise I may wait till HM to do that stuff, statistically there is always a rain day, and I know I'd have plenty of supervision.
Cleaning out the parts cabinet I have a K bike fuel filter, a set of hoses and clamps to replace it. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

I suspect it should have read as 'Heat Shrink'. Used to slip over bare wire (or joints, the sleeving is then warmed with a heat gun and it shrinks to 50% of its initial diameter. It therefore provides a good seal.

34 Day to go. I know most of you got snow in the last week, but Saturday I took the bike out for 40 or so miles to loosen things up. We've had a colder than normal winter with a lot of days down below 40 but no snow this year.
Bike ran great, was a longer shake down after the fuel tank issue. Weather was mid 70's so I rode in sneakers and shorts, felt good to ride after almost a month off of it.
Got another Disney cruise and then finish tax season then HM will be here before you know it! _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Good morning all...
Wondering IF HM-11 is going to get "snowed out" this year ?? More snow and much colder temps forecast for North East including Virginia this weekend. Here in NH I awoke to 19 degF this morning with little hope for "beach weather" or riding in "shorts and sneakers" anytime soon. Dont imagine that Sugar Hill has it any better than me, but yesterday I spent more than 4 hours with pick/shovel hacking away at a 6' to 7' mountain of ice just to get the doors to the "bike storage" area of my barn open. Not done yet ! VERY hard to envision a bike, fully loaded, headed down the highway towards Marion VA in LESS THAN A MONTH ????
Well..... been here before and been confronted by ice on more than one occasion, at home and on the road, and still made it to Marion. Hope the rest of you, especially those in the mid-west are doing OK. The TV images have been frightful !

Hey Ernie-
Actually we had less winter than you. Right now we are in MUD season with only a little snow in the woods here.
I'll refer you to my post above about HM9- snow on the day I was going to leave by MC.
But looking at the weather forecast a.k.a. guess, weather is supposed to warm up towards the end of next week- mid 50s.
I am looking to break my ride south to HM into two days, leaving Sugar Hill Tuesday morning and staying in S.E. Pa (around Chambersburg?) that night. Hope to get to Marion mid to late afternoon on Wednesday via I-79 & I-77 and some backroads (something other that the same I-81 boredom) _________________ John & Cathy

Let's hope things thaw out nicely in the next moth or so. Forecast for Marion a week from today is mid 70s...
Looking forward to seeing everyone. Looks like I'll be on the LT this year. The RTP turned out to be a bit of a handful! _________________ Jim

Hi Guys...
Well after many hours of "pick/shovel" work on Ice-Mountain, I got into the barn at last.. all Battery Tenders were flashing green, "R" bikes started with no problems, "K" never a problem, she's purring like a lion and the old V-Twin from my days on the "dark side" bounded to life !! However, the "new baby", the GS650gs simply cranked like brand new, very strong AGM battery, BUT "no start" !!
Ive not had this little machine long enough to become familiar with the mechanics, especially the routine service mechanics.... PLUS the Haynes manual for these "Thumpers" is absolutely woeful. So in 20 to 25 degF weather (inside the barn) and frozen tools,, I decided to dive in and see whats up..... All wiring looked good, no damage or corrosion.... got the battery out but nothing to see in a maintenance free battery.... cant see the plugs due to being capped with coils, ... soooo I decided to remove the "snorkel and Plenum" above the throttle body,,..... AND THERE was the problem.! Rodents had built a cozy ''high rent" luxury winter residence right there in MY 650 !!! Nothing left of the filter, and the plenum itself had more than a gallon of fibrous "rags, leaves, fuzz, cardboard etc " with no way for sufficient air to pass. So now to get new filters put it all back together..... I tried the start by juicing the T/B with a bit of ether and gas, and it worked just fine... so really relieved to know that the "new kid" in the barn will be OK for warmer weather !
Thats my adventure for this week, and 60 degF is promised for this coming week even though t snowed yesterday and even now its only 33 degF at midday.!
Best regards all, see you in a few days now.....// Ernie in NH
ps: Anyone heard from Steve ?? Ive PM'd him with no response, so Im kinda worried now. Let me know if you hear anything...... _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Steve and I have sent a couple of Facebook messages over the year. Haven't talked to him about HM, but I assume he'll be there. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Steve may be going to a different get together.
Possibly V-Strom owners group?
I though he might have mentioned this last year as being a conflict with the HM weekend.
See you all soon! _________________ John & Cathy

Talked with Steve (or maybe it was text or email) a bit ago - he's doing family stuff that weekend. So, no, it's not a VStrom thing that's keeping him from HM.
Hopefully we'll see him next year. _________________ Jim

Holy crap Scott hadn't heard. Hope you are getting better not worse. Hospitals can be a tough place to get well. Listen to the Drs and for God's sake don't go to WebMD and read about your symptoms.
In the attic today I found a wheel chock, one of the roll it in and it locks your front wheel for a shop floor or trailer. I bought it before I found the squatting trailer. I'll bring it to HM if anyone wants it, else it's off to SPCA thrift store. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled
