I want to set up my preload on a stock, BMW, rear shock on a '93 K1100LT. Anyone know the total travel on that shock? I would guess about 20% of that would be a good preload setting for general one up riding.

Let me clarify, I know it doesn't have much adjustment, but I want to know what 20% of total travel is anyway, so I can measure sag at each of the settings.

Surely the preload depends on how heavy you and the bike are together? I only have experience with aftermarket Realm Engineering RAM shock for K1100. For what it is worth, the preload for me at 144lbs is wound up from the max. length compresses the spring about 30-40mm. I think the general advice is to start from soft/little preload and crank it up by trial and error to achieve whatever sag the spring permits.
