Hi K11 OG. You probably guessed that as a newb to K11OG, I have a problem that I need help with and have not come across before. I recently purchased a 1993 K1100LT with sidecar fitted. The outfit has been sitting unused for sometime and I have put it back on the road. Having done about 200 miles on it , the machine has developed a problem which others must have experienced to date and perhaps there is some logical explanation.
On a run yesterday the engine just stopped! After trying for a minute or two, it restarted and ran fine for another few miles , then stopped again. By the time I got home the intervals between the cutting out became shorter but it did get me home.
Once home I searched for any obvious loose connections, frayed wires etc but found nothing obvious. In the garage, the engine began cutting out after approx 30 seconds and I noticed that just before each cut out, the temperature warning light on the clock facia gave a quick flash then the engine cut out immediately. Could this be due to a temperature sensor malfunctioning and sending an incorrect signal to the engine managment system?
I should add that I have a full spare set of relays (used ones) and I have replaced all the obvious possible ones to no avail.
Any advice or information on this would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards from Dublin

Eddie

My first thought would be the crankshaft position sensor (Hall Effect) cutting out as it gets hot.

Have you tried to read the codes from the ECU? If you search there is a way to read them with an LED, or a GS-911 and a laptop.

When it cuts out is it sudden? Like you turned the kill switch? Fuel starvation will usually sputter.

The '93's also have an ignition amplifier(hold over part from the k1004v) that the later 1100's don't have.
Not un-heard of for the heat sink paste on this part to dry out from age and thus cause this part to act up and have problems.

Part #17 in this page.

Good catch, the amplifier is bolted or screwed to the front of the battery box under the ECU.

I poped mine off and cleaned it, then used heat sink paste from Radio Shack to stick it back together.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I delved into it and got at the temp sensor located under the rad and saw much corrosion around the sensor. I removed it, cleaned it as best I could, refitted it and the bike appears to be running well. I couldnt take it for a run as while removing the fairing panels I noticed the fairing main spider bracket was broken!. Replacement on the way along with new sensor and I will let you know the result.
Once again thanks for the advice , much appreciated.

Eddie
