|
|
This may be a Drake question. Can I mount the LT rear rack on my RS?
If so, I can buy a used one but there is no mounting hardware (screws, etc..)
What do I need to get it on my bike?
This comes after I completed a BBG 2 weeks ago, using a 5 gallon aux tank. Halfway through the ride my DR Engineering rack arms fractured on the very rough interstate south of Cleveland.
I finished the ride (23 hours, 15 minutes) with the tank bungeed to the passenger seat.
So I need something a bit tougher to carry the tank and the LT rack looks like it will do the job for the IBA ride I'm signed up for in September http://notsupermanrally.com/
Thanks for any input. _________________ John & Cathy

Don't do it.
The LT tail rack is a horrible design. It is plastic and they wobble around and have a tendency to crack/break.
I would never put an aux tank on one.
I think a Reynolds Rack (model 241 for a K11 if you can find one) would work for an aux tank. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Great. Thanks for the info. Don't want 2 rack failures.
I found the fuel mileage a bit low when pushing the Aeroflow windshield at 75-80mph (east coast limits are lower than out west) and forced too many stops with just the main tank capacity.
I'll look for one of those Reynolds racks. _________________ John & Cathy

Try dropping Gwen a line to find out details about her aux tank setup. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I saw her setup in person when she stayed at our home before her CCC insanity ride. She had the tank mounted in a Givi rack that used the 4 holes in the top of the tail section.
I had wondered if that was strong enough, but since hers lasted coast to coast and back plus many more miles while mine failed in less than 1500, I guess that was a good setup.
Thanks for the reminder. I'll contact her. _________________ John & Cathy

Yeah, those Givi K tail rack bases are pretty solid. I've used them on several Ks. I haven't seen Gwen's bike for a couple of years and forgot that's what she used. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck: Just curious. Did you ever make use of the auxiliary tank that had been part of my blue K11LT? BTW, that bike is now back in Washington State in the hands of my friend Scott Greer....

No, but I still have it.
Unfortunately, that custom aluminum LT rack that came with it broke at one of the welds so I took it off of my LT and put the stock rack back on.
However, my RS has a Reynolds Rack that will hold that aux tank and I bought a splitter to tap it into the fuel line so do plan to try out that aux tank on my RS in the near future.
I would have tried it sooner but I've been moving around and doing other stuff so haven't had much time for riding or wrenching over the past couple of years... _________________ 93 LT (x2)
