My replacement backlight bulbs went out so I thought to upgrade to LED. Upon disassembly I discovered the bulb filaments were intact. Further tests on the bench had the lights illuminated. All of my idiot lights are functioning.
I reinstalled the (four) backlight bulbs and plugged the harness into the back of the cluster. The lower left backlight works now, but the other three not. I removed the working bulb/assembly and identified with VOM that there is 12v power on the right side (towards the center of the bike). Checked the lower right backlight with VOM but found no power. With VOM grounded to bike frame and in resistance mode I identified that the receptacle is in fact grounded.
Printed circuit "ribbon" shows no sign of visible deterioration. Electrical harness connectors look clean but I sprayed them with electrical contact cleaner anyhow.. While working on this I jiggled and pulled and pushed and twisted connections but didn't see any flickering.
When I had the speedo/odometer repaired the tech replaced my bulbs for me and they did work for some time.
Hopefully someone here can help me trouble shoot this or, short of that, hook me up with a replacement part(s).
Best regards. _________________ John

I can tell you that the +12v comes in on terminal 24 for all 5 back-lights.
However the grounds are spit, 3 lamps(including the one behind the clock) are connected to ground on pin 18, the other 2 are connected to ground on pin 13.
Hope it helps. _________________ Ride safe.

I'm seeing ground but not power except on that lower left bulb. So, that proves power is leaving, as you say, terminal 24 but not getting to the other bulbs - so, open circuit. (pin 24 - is this the lower right pin looking at the back of the cluster?)
Who might be a good choice for repairing electrical problems in the instrument cluster? _________________ John

Shared from another forum. This was as of June 2014 and the website is still active today. Austin Tx.
Rick Borth of www.speedometer.com is still repairing Kbike instrument clusters. He only repairs motorcycle instruments on Friday so consider that in your planning.

He has worked on both my speedos. The one in question, he repaired a couple years ago. I will check him out but somehow got the idea he mostly focuses on mechanical issues. I'm pretty sure one of my printed circuits is defective, most likely the blue ribbon one, A new unit would run about $1000 from Max BMW, and I'm not even sure it would fit. For right now I've put the unit back together and will reinstall today. At least I now have one back light on the speedo, which, really, is enough for awhile.
Flyingduck is evidently not available at the moment. I'll bet he has one on the shelf that would serve.
Thank you Scott. _________________ John

Would anyone be able to tell me this will definitely fit my bike? _________________ John

I would say no.
The part #(at least the last part '2 305 254') for the one posted in the e-bay link is listed in the parts fiche's for K75's and K100's.
I didn't see any reference to this part for an 1100, either RS or LT. _________________ Ride safe.

I noticed that one also, but if you look at the pictures closely, the older cluster units have flat pins, and the newer one have round pins.
Most likely not interchangeable as a whole if you ask me, but I'm no expert.
Would the internals be interchangeable, possibly, but I'm also thinking that the pins are soldered to the ribbon element that the OP is suspecting as being bad. _________________ Ride safe.

John,
I'm parting out a '95 K1100. I can put a battery in it and check the cluster lights - I doubt it will start and run - might not be able to check anything else. Everything was working when it was parked.
Let me know if you're interested. _________________ Jim

Jim,
I might be. Right now the unit is with Overseas Speedometer. He says he'll work on it this Friday/Saturday.
As for comparability with the K75 unit I doubt it too. In the ebay picture you can see that the backs are different. It does appear that the number/placement of screws is the same; so, maybe the backs are interchangeable.
Doing a fiche search at Max BMW using my vin last seven (0300056) I find part no 62 11 2 305 258 listed as the cluster for 93 K1100LT up to 7/93. So, I'm not sure that fits my bike as I don't know how I relate to the 7/93.
I hate to give up on my original equipment as OS has calibrated it for me and it is working fine except for the backlight issue. Yet, I won't be surprised if OS tells me that it can't be fixed. _________________ John

Overseas speedometer repaired my electrical problem via soldered jumper to bypass a faulty printed circuit. He also tweaked the calibration of my speedometer. I've not done a full test but everything lights up OK. Yet, I still don't have LED backlights. Oh, and it was $100 for the service.
Thanks to all who responded to this thread. _________________ John
