|
|
Hi,
Hoping the power of the forum can help me.
I have a 96 ABS2 K1100. Last summer I noticed a small leak from the front brake lever area. Following the advice it seemed to be a piston problem at the bottom of the reservoir. I purchased a master cylinder repair kit, but the leak has returned within 500 miles and now the brake lever pin is solid so cannot take that apart.
Is my next option a replacement master cylinder. If so, any advice on a good place to buy second hand (UK or Europe).
Thanks
Andy |

But probably not if you were in UK or Europe...

Andy - I have a 97K. Had the front master rebuilt twice - ended up getting a new one.
Problem now is that BMW sued Magura, the company that makes the master cylinders, because Magura was selling to re-sellers. BMW put a halt to that, which means you now have to pay the much, much higher dealer price - unless you can find a re-seller that has still has some on the shelf.
If I had seen this suit coming in time, I would have bought another new one to have on hand. On the other hand, the original lasted about 15, 16 years...
If you plan to keep the bike, a used master cylinder is probably going to be as problematic as yours.
My .02 - bite the bullet and buy a new one... _________________ Jim

Thanks all.
The advice is appreciated.
I had looked at second hand and new - the price differential is not massive so probably going to go new.
No complaints, I reckon the one on there is the original.

Smart move...as a leak on these masters is quite common, due to corrosion in the outer end of the bore... and the fact that the piston sits very shallow in the bore. |

Use red grease when installing and refresh grease every few years.
Red grease as in designed for brake seals. |

So, no new stock available from Sherlocks so gone for reconditioned unit - 6 month guarantee. Unit is also resprayed so cosmetically good too.
Thanks to all those who posted advice and tips - the power of a good forum.
I had my bike service as the weekend and when I got it back I had a big smile as rode home. 19 years old and still a great ride. I had test ridden a brand new R1200RS earlier the same day and I got just as much pleasure from the K.
Confirms my plans to always have in the garage |
