good afternoon.
help. I have an issue with my K100Rs 1985 stock. 95 000 on the odometer.
finally pulled the old girl out of the garage after a winter of trickle charging. i live in Ontario Canada and this winter and spring was a nasty one.
anyway, last sunday, I gave the girl the once over and off on a maiden voyage for the spring.
250 k or so later, running like a top and back in the garage. back on trickle charge . (might be an error to plug in again. let me know)
so
this morning i thought i would take the bike to work.
forgetting to put the manual choke on, the starter failed to start. (not uncommon after sitting for 3 days or so)
I turn the key off and back on this time with the choke on. However, this time no lights, no start just black, black and more black. Not a hic-up.
here is what i know
after a couple of minutes with the key in the on position
a faint pulsing of the lights (battery, choke, neutral etc) off and dim and off and dim. Also what sounded like the gas pump operation and lastly , this is weird, the RPM gauge pulsed between 0 and about 2000.
no start on the motor. turned everything off and left for work
my first thought is battery.
how to check?
next is regulator? again how do i check this
and lastly
has anyone ever come acoss this?
help is appreciated.
I am not much of a handy guy but am willing to try my best .
additional information. At the end of last year a few time while riding the battery light would come on and stay for a while. Sometimes bright sometimes dim. but mostly not at all which would be a normal operation. On maiden voyage no battery light was noticed.
these two might not be related - but they might be. thought i would mention.
if anyone knows what i might be up against drop a line.
thanks

Lots could be wrong..
1) Check Battery Condition and connections at the posts.
The next thing could be the Primary ignition key circuit, (ie Kill Switch contacts or ignition contacts). I had ignition contacts give me hell as it was intermittent in ops....
Those are both cheap and easy to check as a first thing to look at...
If those are good, then serious troubleshooting has to be accomplished provided by Bertrand Vogel at:

Sounds like your battery is bad - when mine went bad in my K75RT it did the same thing with the RPM gauge. Will it take a jump start? You can observe the voltage with a multimeter - like mine, may just look fine after charged but the second you hit the start button it drops like a rock. _________________ Ted

thanks for the trouble shooting link.
I have printed off a copy for the garage.
this weekend i'll remove the battery to see what's up
hoping it is the battery as this would be an easy fix
I'll keep you posted on the out-come.
btw.
on an un-related topic
If i wanted to add a picture or even a small video clip to this post, how do i go about doing this?
thanks

You would need to download your picture to a hosting site like photo bucket or Flickr. Then copy the URL and then paste it into your post here. _________________ John & Cathy
