|

I took my 1994 K1100LT on a short ride (bike ran great last year and this was the fist time out this year) and after about 5 miles noticed I was loosing power (I thought) and when I slowed down to turn it was apparent there was a major drag on the rear wheel. I pulled over immediately and the rear brake was extremely hot and the caliper plastic dust cover had melted, VERY HOT. Then almost immediately the oil from the differential started running ou. The rotor is shot and caliper too.
Any ideas what happened? how to fix?
Thanks |

You didn't, by any chance, try to adjust the brake pedal travel, did you?
If not, and the brake lines haven't been changed, your brake lines have deteriorated and need to be replaced. When the brake lines deteriorate, they can pretty much block the tubing - causing the brake to seize. _________________ Jim

No adjustments on pedal and the brakes appeared to be working fine before I left town. Brake lines look good on outside. Will not know inside till I tear it down. Just a weird situation. I appreciate all ideas.
Thanks |

I'll move this to tech for a few more responses.
But if you are loosing final drive oil, and you chewed up your brake disk, etc.. check to see if you have any lateral movement of the rear wheel.
IE the FD bearings may be going out. _________________ Ride safe.

I checked the play in rear wheel and stump and it appears to be very firm but not too tight. The wheel spins very free and smooth after I pried the pads apart. I assume the excessive heat generated by the brake created a failure of a seal between the brake and the rear wheel drive unit. I will be tearing into it tomorrow I hope. Any place to be GOOD used replacement parts?
Appreciate everyone's input.

Beemerboneyard is a good place to start.
There are a few breakers you could check with. A lot of them sell on e-bay.
I could be possible to replace the damaged seal on the FD.
You could also have the read brake caliper rebuilt as opposed to replacing it with a used one.
How old is the brake fluid, or are the rubber brake lines still original?
Old fluid can cause break down of the rubber brake line linings, which then can cause the broken inner lining to act like a check valve, causing what you have experienced... brake lockup. _________________ Ride safe.

The brake lines appear to be original including the rubber flex hose.
Thanks for the insight. |

Good morning guys...
Ditto on what Scott and Jim said... "" Old fluid can cause break down of the rubber brake line linings, which then can cause the broken inner lining to act like a check valve, causing what you have experienced... brake lockup. ""
In my work with both ATE ( Alfred Teves ) and Lucas-Girling... I have seen this many times in the lab with failed hoses. It is the 'road-water/salt' entering the brake system over time, thru the fittings ( believe or not ) reacting with the liner to cause it to deteriorate forming blockages in BOTH directions...usually "lock on"... but IF the debris reaches the Master Cylinder, one can also experience a "lock off" resulting in no braking power !! ATE has always advised replacing the fluid ( DOT4 and DOT3 ) max at 24 months.
