I have a 1994 K1100 LT. I have had it for over a year and am having reoccuring engine cut outs. There is no consistent time that it occurs. Hot, normal temp, on speed or not, rain or not. First off the entire engine would cut out once or twice for a second with no change to the instrument panel noticed. I changed spark plugs, had injectors cleaned(not needed), replaced intake manifolds, inspected and grease sealed as many connectors that I could find, heated Hall transmitter with heat gun with no change in running or starting. No change in cutting out. I replaced the fuel pump and filter and the next ride the engine cuts out but only mayby one side of the Hall transmitter as the engine does not completly cut out. Trouble shooting codes are water temp sensor and both hall sensors. I have balanced the throttle bodies prior to and after the manifold change. The throttle positioner was off but readjusted after manifold change.
I would like suggestions but I feel the next move is Hall sensor replacement. This begs the question does anyone have a garage fix for adj the timing as I do not have the BMW tooling. I have worked on airheads for many years but this is a different cat. thanks

Hi William
I'm keith my 95 LT would cut out as I backed out of garage.I didn't realize, but it was when I turn the handlebar the engine would die if I turn back quick enough,it will come back on.I then discovered the wires on the bottom of ignition.on mine,it was the red wire that was broke but not all the way through.
So maby you can put the bike on center stand, have it running and turn handlebar both ways to see if cuts out or not?
Also the 4 pin connector under the tank seems to give some folks trouble. This is the one you have to disconnect to remove tank.have you cleaned it also?
Hope you get it sorted out.

Also check the side stand cut out switch.
Not uncommon for that to give grief as it's exposed to the wet elements when riding........

I have checked out the ignition switch by trying the stop to stop test and every thing is fine. I disconnedted the side stand switch and bonded the two wires together to eliminate it from the mix. please keep the suggestions coming.

Kieth mentioned the 4pin connector at the rear of the fuel tank. Can cause problems.
I've also had dirty connection issue with the multi-pin plug on the top of the motronic controller causing the fuel pump to quit/cut-out.

Kieth and Scott: I have unattached those connectors, spray cleaned and re installed after di electric grease was applied. I have looked at the ground connections also. thanks for your input The connectors may be faulty but I have no visual indicators of this.

Replacing the upper temp sensor seems to have eliminated the intermittent running/stalling problems I'd been experiencing.

I was thinking Hall sensor at the time as well, but couldn't really get it to fail with heat gun.

Bob: That sounds interesting. I believe my temp sensor is on the bottom area of the cooling system on the 94 model. I had not prior to the fuel pump replacement had a temp sensor code however I have now. That part is cheaper and easier to replace than Hall sensors. Any other suggestions out there Thanks

The '93 has at least two sensors. One near the bottom of the radiator that I think signals the temp gauge, top one to Motronic unit.

Interestingly, I pulled the plugs right after it quit one time and found them drenched in fuel, as if a tidal wave flowed through the injectors.

Hello,

Had these symptoms on mine....Strong smell of fuel when it failed so overfuelling.

Ended up being the temp sensor that talks to the Motronic.

Has been great since.

It is cheaper and easier to fit and rule out than the HES!

Best regards,

David

As for the temp sensor. I believe on my 94 there is the sensor (behind the radiator I think) for engine contrl and fan and a sensor on water pump housing for the temp gauge. I am trying to purchase a preowned sensor so will wait for that along with any information others my give me.

I replaced the engine water temp sensor. Then took a 450 mile ride to breakfast in Bishop Ca. No issues and bike ran better than ever. I am not saying it is fixed as gremlins can become dormant, but an happy so far.
