What kind of tool does it take to remove the radio? The one in my bike seems kaput, I get a LCD number indication in the window when I turn it on but that's it, no response from any of the buttons. I'd like to get it working if I could get it out maybe send it to Sierra in Reno who repairs bike radios. One other possibility is that it has theft protection and needs to be reset. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Do you know the security code? It sounds like the power has been lost and restored but it now needs the correct code put in. To remove the radio from the radio tray you will need a two u-shaped tools connected by a chain. They insert into the four holes in the corners of the radio and release the clips. I've heard that you can make them from coat hangers. I've never tried since I have the tool that came with the bike.

Wow! You guys are good. Thanks for the response. I checked our mail box a few minutes ago and found a manila envelope that contained two U shaped rods connected by a chain and the card with the security code. It came from the P.O. I didn't expect that since I bought the bike from a consignment dealer and he said the radio didn't work. He was wrong, it does work. It's nice to get a good surprise on a used bike deal. Now if you can do that trick once again and tell me where a couple of rattles are coming from...

When you turn the radio on, does the red LED light up on the left handle bar control? Pushing the volume button turns on the remote control, pushing it again changes it to local controls. Make sure it is fully seated in the bracket.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it does light up, I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it. Is there a way to turn the radio off and on without removing the lid?

AFAIK, When the red light is on the handlebars, you control it from there. You have to lift the lid to turn the radio on or off, but can change volume and radio stations when you selected remote control. You can also leave the left lid off, there is a clip on the right lid that will hold the left lid.

I'm hunting rattles too! Start by checking that the brackets and bolts that hold the faring to the bike are all there and tight. I found that the top right bolt was missing from the faring to the mount, and two of the allen screws that hold the cluster to the bracket were loose, one was missing. Bikes vibrate, things come loose.

Yep, my main rattle is the right faring against the side of the tank. The left side has some clearance but the right side is touching the tank. I'm going to get in there in a few days and see what's causing that. I've found a couple already, the bike really doesn't have a lot of them.

If you find the fairing "tweaked" in alignment, it's possible that the main "H" mounting bracket for the upper fairing could be bent, broken. I've replaced one of mine that was broken.

You could start 1st by loosening the 4 upper fairing mounting bolts a little bit and try to adjust the position as there is some play available, not a lot but a little.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot. It takes awhile to get adjusted to this bike, I've had fairings on and off of just about all models of Goldwing but BMW has a lot different way with the plastic. So far, though it seems disloyal to Hondato say it, the plastic parts are better thought out and stronger on the BMW.

PostPosted: Sun Mar 24, 2019 3:05 pm    Post subject: U-shaped tools don't release radio Reply with quote

New to me '97 K1100LT.
I have the radio working after entering the code. Only one of four speakers works having adjusted both balance knobs. I'm trying to remove the radio to look at the connection or reseat to see if there's anything to help get the other speakers functional.
I can't seen to release the radio with the U-shaped tools. I slide them in until I hear a 'click', no luck. I continue to slide them down, no luck. I push as hard as I can and seat the tools to the very bottom, no luck. Any tips?

Have fun,
Jer

When you slide the two u shaped tools in till you feel them click in, I had to hold a little pressure to the front and back, hold the two hooks away from each other to get the tabs to release.

If it's a radio issue, I have a complete as removed radio from my 93 LT with all controls and speakers if you want it.

You need to pop these three clips to get the radio out. Stick a small screwdriver or similar in each of the holes on the outer faceplate:

Duck's picture removes the radio and carrier. The two U tools just gets the radio to slide out of the sleeve.

Tried as you suggested, thanks! Tried all angles, pressures, back/forth... No luck. It should be an easy 'slide 'em in, pull it out' operation. Not working that way with this bike. Maybe it has _never_ been removed. Could be with only 19k on the meter.
I might like to take you up on the radio offer. Workin' on this one for now, but thanks so much for letting me know.

Have fun,
Jer

If you are wanting to get at the wires, you will have to remove the carrier, with or without the radio in the carrier.
The carrier can be removed without taking the radio out of it 1st.

Got it. Thanks all! Will most likely have to get to the wiring. Initially, just wanted to see the radio pop out using the tool. Interesting thing to carry around on the bike.

Have fun,
Jer
