Folks-
Next month, I'll be riding from Coral, Florida to Phoenix, Arizona on a new-to-me 1993 K1100RS. I'm not new to extreme long-distance riding, but I've never seen this bike before. "New battery. Good condition." Less than 50 thousand miles. I'm planning on a fast ride to Arizona, and would like to do this without any breakdowns or delays. With this in mind, is there anything I should look at on the bike, other than to check the oil, water, and then gas up and go? These bikes like high-octane gasoline, correct? Any words of advice? Suggestions?
Thank you! _________________ Luke's Buddy

Yeah - I'd probably check the tire pressure, too.
Depends on how long the bike has been sitting as to what can go wrong...
Take a spare clutch cable along - as well as a small multi meter..
No - the bikes don't need premium - mid grade is fine. Of course, if you gas up at a one armed bandit, you get 3/4 - 1 gallon or more of whatever is in the hose (usually regular) before it starts pumping mid grade. If you stop at a place with a lot of pumps, you can ride around and find one that someone used to pump mid grade or premium. _________________ Jim

Check your brake fluid, level and color, and the hoses for cracks/splits. One of the last things you want to have burst on you on the road. _________________ Ride safe.

One other thing- just to be aware of.
These K bikes have a reputation for the occasional faulty side stand switch, which will cause the engine to die- seemingly for no reason. Sometimes you will be able to restart by "jiggling" the stand with your hand or foot.
Many of us have done the permanent bypass, but if you are in the middle of nowhere there is a simple fix. Down by the side stand pivot- pull the two wires off the switch and connect them to each other.
Just remember to retract the stand after your next stop _________________ John & Cathy

The 4pin connector at the right rear of the fuel tank is also known for intermittent fuel pump operation.......just FYI,
Remember..............you asked..........
Don't be afraid of the bike even with all this information we are giving you.
These are still rock solid bikes, even when the newest ones(here in the states anyway) are still 18 years old and counting and many still on the road even older than that. _________________ Ride safe.

Great idea, you can also use it to clean the brakes. _________________ K1100RS '97

Mainly just enjoy the machine. I just bought a '94 with 70k on the dial today. The bike looks like new and runs the same way. Hard to believe a person can find so much motorcycle for less than $3k. I didn't have very far to bring it home, less than 100 miles but I'll tell you this bike is every bit as good in rain as my Goldwing was. I think it's even quicker on the throttle than that 6 cylinder behemoth was as well. Too bad it took so long for me to discover this machine. _________________ Paul W.
