I have run a search but can't quite find the issue, although have worried myself silly by reading through many tales of woe.

I nearly have the bike perfect, this seems to be my last issue. When first started, all sounds well, it runs like a sewing machine and is very quiet.

However following a ride of any distance, usually 10 miles plus, the serenity seems to disappear and at tickover it sounds more like a diesel. To my untrained ear it sounds like the gearbox internals are trying to rattle free. If I pull the clutch in, the noise improves a lot, but does not totally disappear. Blip the throttle and all sounds fine, it only seems to be at idle that this occurs. In every other way it runs fine.

Any ideas??

Mike

Mike,

My previous '93 K-RS sort-of did the same thing.

Bit of a "clatter" while sitting at idle (after warming up, like yours) but the noise would mostly disappear once the clutch was pulled in.

Never gave me any problems for many miles until I (stupidly) sold it.

My first thought had been the clutch throw out bearing since it decreased when pulling in the lever. Then I was thinking about some "slop" in the transmission input shaft which wouldn't have any load on it in neutral, but stop rotating when the clutch was pulled.

Let the Group know if any expert you know can come up with the cause. BTW, my '92 K-RS that replaced my '93 doesn't make the noise.

Interesting side note. I never really payed any attention to this noise, but I was on a ride with one of the earliest members of the K11OG (unfortunately he is now a Rider in the Sky) and we stopped at a traffic light. Phil had owned various K75, K100 and K1100 bikes but he pulled up next to me and asked me what that noise was- he had never heard a brick sound like that at idle. Then I really confused him by pulling in clutch and making the noise decrease.

Both of my LT's have a little bit of gear box noise at idle when the fluids are warmed up.
1 is at 48K and the other is at 104K. The one with 40k is a slight bit quieter but still audible non the less.

Clutch release/throwout bearing is where I would start. At just a few miles of riding, it sounds like it's gone dry to me.
