Gidday Folks

Just wondering about rear wheel and tyre size in that I have read where the bigger 18 " and wider 4.5" K1100RS rim is fitted to the K1100LT

Have many on you done this simple conversion and what are the benefits in doing so, is it more tyre choice and cheaper rear tyres?

Does is just bolt straight on and is there ample clearance with the wider tyre?

What are the handling pro's and cons?

Any info would be fantastic

My RS wheel fits on my LT without removing the exhaust but I have to deflate the tire to take it out or put it in.

Gidday Fellas,

Thanks for the quick replies so after reading I quickly brought one from Germany off eBay for $120 Aussie dollars delivered to my door off a K1100RS which has done 48,000 km

Google translator is a marvellous thing!

Any preferences for a tyre to suit?

PR3 works well for me. I may put on a BT23 to see if I get more miles. I have been averaging about 8000 on PR3's. They handle well in all kinds of weather.

Rich,

The RS wheel on my RS needs deflation. a soapy solution and lots of wiggling to get the wheel/tire off my bike. While NOT pulling the bike off its centerstand....DAHIK Shocked

I haven't had to use soapy water but it does take a lot of wiggling.

Grant,

I am also currently using Michelin PR3 front and rear. Seem to be holding up well.

They need just a bit more effort to get to turn than a sport tyre (like the Pilot Powers) but that is what we want with these bikes, right?

cheapest to stick with the stock rims

I've used Michelin PR3's on STOCK rims for the K1100LT.
110/80ZR-18 on the front and 150/70ZR-17 on the rear.

Yes, its an "off-size" tire but works great.

I've got stock LT rims on my '95, but not standard exhaust. I've got a Remus system.
To get the wheel/tire out, I've got to remove the exhaust can.

Did the same with mine, Only prob on the rear is as stated, You have to deflate the tire to remove or install it, It will give you more choices of tires and the wider rim for more stability on the tire, I use to have the 150 on my LT 17" rim and at high speeds was just not real stable.
I also changed over to the RS wheel on the front, Only problems were more room between the fender and tire, and putting on the calipers were harder due to the smaller rim, but you just have to spread the pads out further to get them to slip on as the caliper will be hitting the rim, just be patient, I checked and the RS and the LT use the same calipers, so it will work..
As far as handling, It is one of the best things i did, Noticed a difference and it was very positive. Also, the wheels are the same on a R model in those years i found out, so check it out as you may be able to find more of them and cheaper..

While it is true (to my knowledge) that there is only one radial tire in the factory size for the stock K11LT rear wheel (Avon AV46 140/80R 17) the good news is that it's a very good tire. I've run them on several of my bikes and will buy more in the future when they need to be replaced.

Here's some reviews of the AV46: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/5983/i/avon-av46-azaro-sport-touring-rear-tire

If you run a two piece aftermarket exhaust then all you have to do to remove the rear wheel is take the exhaust can off.

Gidday Fellas,

Firstly thanks for all the replies and there is certainly a mixed bag of ideas, suggestions, favourite set ups and combinations, all well worthy of a good long hard think...

TBH I am now leaning towards keeping the wheels and tyres to original specs if I can and if the tyres are available in my area, I shall ring around and check that out, but what swayed me back to the original setup??

Well the fact that the rear wheel will not come off as easily, deflating the tyre, soap, etc is a pain in the ass plus being one to inspect things often, plus not to mention road side flats, if I had to do that each time I wanted the wheel off, well to me it is a step backwards as simplicity is what it is all about at the end of the day.

Maybe I jumped the gun with the rim purchase at this stage, always a bull at the gate with purchases! but it doesn't hurt to have a good spare hanging in the shed or I could off load it over here in oz and make a dollar.

Once again thats for your comments and replies

Rang a tyre shop in Melbourne and for a Metzeler Marathon 140/80/17 to suit the original rear rim $245 fitted..

As I'm sure many others here will vouch for, you should give serious consideration to running radial tires. The improvement is handling is quite significant.

That is a bias ply tire in that size. I ran a set of those on mine once. Lousy in the rain and not all that sticky in the curves.

I concur with the Duck. Go with radials, you will not regret it.

I run the Michelin PR2s and can't say enough good things about them!

That's my $.02 worth.

Bill

I'm running PR'2 front and the Avon AV46 rear. Both stock LT sizes.
Am very happy with this setup. Some have gone to the PR'3 front, but I haven't as yet.
I would much rather have the extra sticky of the radial over the extra miles from a bias ply.

Also consider a BT-023 front. I'm running BT-023s front and rear on my LT and a BT-023 front/Avon rear on my K75 find them to be every bit as good as the Michelin PR2s and they cost a fair amount less. I know that Bridgestone has had some dogs earlier in the BT-02x series but the BT-023 certainly isn't one of them.

+1 on the Bridgestone BT-023/Avon combo. I'd like to hear from a couple of the hot-shoe magazine testers after a couple of laps on my LT. So much better handling with radials.
