My K, which has only 70000 miles, will cut out for a half second while on the freeway. It doesn't do it every day and sometimes it's like the motor has been switched off. It clears and runs fine for the rest of the day. I replaced the fuel filter and the bike has been serviced by BMW since new. Has anyone has issues with the large rubber filler cap seal flaking-which mine is. I'm wondering if the flakes could be clogging the pump screen.

RE: K1100LT - cutting out

The following e conversation might help. I'd initially thought the cutting-out was probably due to the wiring from the ignition. Most recent mail at top.
p.s. am a rubbish mechanic so do what I can and the rest I leave to the professionals.

Hi Mr.Porter,
The diagnostic report has flagged several faults some including the items previously replaced & erased and subsequently road tested. As you witnesssed the bike would not respond to adjustment of the CO content.
It has now become apparent the the Motronic box is the culprit as I have exchanged the item with one from our own bike with instant improvement. The bike has since been road tested & we now need to source a used Motronic control unit to complete.
Regards,
Steve.

Hi Steve

Just an addition to the cutting-out of the engine. On my way up to you yesterday it cut/hiccuped several times. Almost as though I had let the throttle go and then within a millisecond on power again. Also I normally get 180 miles to a tank. This had fallen post service to 150/160 so it really was drinking fuel.

Good morning Steve

The first ride I took was from Sevenoaks to Rye on last Sunday. Everything seemed okay but the engine didn't to me to be running smoothly. I thought it was just my imagination. The bike's engine cut out in Biddenden while parking. Then when I turned sharp left out of a junction it cut out a second time.

The bike had a bit of work to the wriring as at one time on hard lock left or right it cut out. Eventually and corner it cut-out. I'm wondering whether this might be a possible cause. Could the newly fitted air temperature thing be faulty?

The second opportunity I had to give the bike a proper ride was yesterday. Sadly there is still a problem.
At low revs when started it ran very unevenly/lumpily and I was unsure as it wanted to stall, even though the choke was open.
I used a hefty amount of throttle and it cleared itself but something still wasn't right for a minute or so.

The engine cut out after I had reached my destination (Sevenoaks to Ripley via the M25 and A3). It cut out again on the M25 on my way home in the contraflow and again when I reached home. All at low engine revs. It is holding 1000 rpm at tick-over so don't understand.

So there are the symptoms. What is the cure?

Yes of course, 12k service inc v.clearance check/adjustment, rectify poor running inc vat,
Regards,

Steve.

And that figure is including the 12,000 mile service I presume Steve.

A combination of failed components responsible including temperature sensor & CO potentiometer. The bike has since had a thorough road test, all OK.Total cost inc vat £xxx (labour £xxx+ vat),
Regards,
Steve.

Two questions I have for you. 1. What did you find was the cause of the poor running and not holding revs at idle?
And 2. What is the total cost inc vat that you want from me?

One thing that I will add to the conversation is that here in the states our K1100's have Cat converters and CO2 sensors with the motronic, thus our bikes do not have any co adjustment potentiometer.

Honestly the 1st thing I would try is to get yourself a can of electrical contact cleaner and dielectric grease.

With that then disconnect and clean any/all the connectors you are comfortable at getting at. (most are under the fuel tank).
Start with the multi-pin plug on the top of the motronic, then the 4 pin plug for the fuel pump/level gauge, side stand switch, etc.....these 1st ones are under the seat and right side panel.

Clean them 1st, then apply little bit of the dielectric grease when you reconnect. The grease helps keep the ozone and other elements that can cause corrosion out of the connection.

First thing I'd check is the side stand cutout switch. If you put a short piece of vacuum hose over the tang that presses the switch that can help.

Another usual suspect is the connector for the fuel tank.

Then maybe the ignition switch.

Thanks guys for the advice. FYI-I don't have fuel economy or idle issues and other then it cutting out occasionally it runs great.

Forget it. If you get all the other stuff sorted, you won't need a performance chip.

The other thing to check is that the connection for the fuel pump and sending unit isn't going bad - it's a white plastic piece on the bottom of the gas tank. If there are any dark spots in the plastic, the connections inside the plastic are going bad (burning up).

If that's a clone of the Harman chip (seems to be from the description) then I'm pretty sure that it will only work in a K100RS4V or K1 Motronic.

At least in the US, those were non-cat whereas the K1100s have cats and the Motronics also read the O2 sensor from the exhaust.

I tried one in my K100RS4V once. Registered a big fat zero on the butt dyno as I didn't notice any material difference from the factory chip.

Have you sorted out the motorcycles problem of cutting out?
Put it on the center stand, engine running, and wiggle the wires of the ignition switch.
Don't know if you know of this, have tried it.It was my bikes problem a year or so ago! Good luck! Keith
