Has anyone ever had the Motronic fail to the extent that it needed replaced? That's the diagnosis. Hmmmm.
I've sent used replacement to BMW dealer in Indy, but they can't seem to find time to install it. Took me about 45 minutes to put in new battery requiring removal and replacement of Motronic.
Hoping this bike will be ready in time for HMVll. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Bob,
They could have the old one out and the new one in...about 20 minutes, while drinking their coffee..
But do these guys know anything about K1100 bikes??
Good luck.....

Are they absolutely certain that it wasn't just a dirty connection at the multi-pin plug?
I had an issue last year with my fuel pump intermittently not working and the problem was a bad/dirty connection at the motronic plug.....
Cleaned it, greased it with some dielectric grease to keep moisture out and all has been fine since.... _________________ Ride safe.

Hi Bob...
RE: the Motronic..
I did exactly as Scott told me to do when I first got my "K", and I have done ( and do ) the same religiously EVERY TIME I have to remove/install battery for either storage or maintenance. Clean all Motronic terminals with Contact cleaner and then use a good dielectic grease to avoid any corrosion. Same for all connections to the battery...I also remove the Motronic for storage during the winter, and keep it in a sealed bag at room temp for those 5 or so months!
If I were you, I'd get the Motronic unit back, save the service costs, and just do it yourself.!
Good luck, have fun, ride safe......// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

I'm going to try to get down to Indy this week and get the bike back home. My confidence in the dealership is waning.
We're all on the same wave link, bad connection somewhere. With a west coast trip coming up in July, I was hoping the dealer could get things squared away for me. They have had the bike since HMVl. _________________ '93 K1100LT

OK, the Motronic switch did nothing. Next diagnosis is temp. sensors. Anybody had problems with those? _________________ '93 K1100LT

Still at the dealer?
Well, it sounds like it almost has to be electrical - probably some obscure connector. None of the obvious ones, eh? _________________ Jim

Picked the bike up today. Was able to drive it onto the trailer.
Following is dealer's invoice detail:
-Started bike and ran it through fan cycle, no issue
-Check side stand switch OP-normal. Ck side stand switch connection-ok
-Test ride, bike died. Ck fuel pressure-ok, ck inj. pulse w/noid lt=ok.
-Will start & idle but not take throttle.
-Check for faults-none stored. Then ran normal and will not act up.
-Replaced Motronic unit with customer supplied e-bay unit. Died again after warm up.
-Recommend replacement of coolant temp sensor.
These steps occurred over the past few weeks. They were frustrated because it would run when they attempted to diagnose the problem.
I'm still going to disconnect side stand switch.
Any profound thoughts? _________________ '93 K1100LT

Side stand switch is on or off, so if it starts that's not the issue.
A few basics: how is the fuel filter and spark plugs? How old is the gas?
When it dies, does it take 5-10 minutes of cool down to start it again? If yes it could be the hall effect sensors (ignition sensors). _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

Fuel, filter, plugs should be ok. I'll have to look in to hall effect sensors. The short wait to restart has been my experience, not sure about the dealer. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Bob,
Do you know the Hall sensor heat gun test?
If it passes, have you disconnected &/or reconnected any of the ground wires lately? _________________ John & Cathy

To test the sensors out of the bike: http://k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=83698#83698
I have just updated the links to the pictures.
Then do the same with the heatgun. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

This doesn't quite fit the same pattern, but it happened on mine and someone at HMIV reported having issues (Jim?) with the sealed connector that runs up into the gas tank that carries the fuel pump and fuel gauge signal, the fuel gauge "sender" unit.
NOT the plug that you can disconnect (although that can cause issues as well), but the sealed factory connector right at the base of the fuel sender unit. It's a white sealed plug that can have a break in it and cause the fuel pump to not run and then the bike to die. It can be very intermittent and come and go weeks apart.
A new "used" sender unit off ebay for $45 was my cure. It has the float ball and arm that bolts onto the bottom of the tank with a wire harness that leads out of it.
Is your fuel pump "whirring" when you turn the key on? If not, consider this as a possible source of your issues.

Yeah - mine burned up, too. The bike would sporadically cut off - but then would restart right away - until it didn't...
I ended up fixing mine in the parking lot behind the Marriott in Gwinnett, GA. _________________ Jim

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Got plenty of things to check. Bike has started and run fine each time but I haven't ridden it anywhere yet.
Going to be out of town for a while, but will go to work on it when I get back. Only a few weeks till west coast trip. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Ok, back at it. Switched back to original Motronic, cleaned every connection I could find, and took a look at the spark plugs.
A couple of plugs wires were loose. Pulled the plugs even though just replaced prior to HM lV, looked ok. Tapped leads on till they felt snapped on solid.
Road off to gym, everything good. Coming home from gym she dies. Look at plug wires, one loose. Tap it back on, get home fine. Run through a complete fan cycle at home, everything good. 3 miles around neighborhood, all good.
Question, could one or two loose plug wires make the bike die completely? Maybe a function of the Motronic? _________________ '93 K1100LT

Once I was able to start the engine with 2 inverted spark plug wires, I had explosions in the exhaust but it did run so I doubt...
Again, test the hall (ignition) sensors. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
