For those that don't like the thought of Semi-Metalic brake pads, these are listed as Kevlar composite-no metal. And less $ than the SM ones.

Not promoting, just saying for those that want more alternatives. I may try a set to see how they perform.

Scott,

Did you try those brake pads?

Just wondering since it looks like a complete brake overhaul is in the near future for my RS. I see the start of rubber cracking in my brake lines and my pads are getting down there.

Let us know.

John

Hey John,

I just picked up ceramics for the R from this place and they seem to work great.

So my question again is what does not wear the disks more than the OEM pads?

Yes this is for two pair. For my R they sold a front and rear set but I did not see that for yours.

They just came in the mail today, so I'll let you know when I have some riding time with them.

It's hard to say.
I've had both oem and semi metalic on my '97 for 40K miles and the front rotors are both still at 4.95mm+. The rear is below the minimum(4.2mm+) and I have a good used rotor to install with the new pads, now that I have the pads.

On the other hand with the '95, it had 80K+ miles on it before I got it so I have no idea what was on it for pads, riding styles, etc.....
Now at 100K miles the front rotors are at about 4.6-4.7mm( just above the minimum) and the rear is right at the 4.5mm minimum. I'll be looking for a full set of rotors over the winter to install on it before next riding season.

I will give these Kevlar(non-metalic) pads a good shakedown and see how the rotors wear and how the brake handling is. Only time will tell.

Thanks Scott.

With the lack of stop and go here (as you know) not too worried about rotor or pad wear. Just looking for something different.

I hear you there John.
I opened the package and see that the order was messed up in packing, I only got 1/2 of what I ordered, and a pair of pads that won't fit on the bike.
So I've contacted the seller for resolution and we will see what comes of it.

I did get 1 full set so I can put them on the '97.
Not sure when as the '95 is still on the lift waiting for steering head bearings and assembly.

Scott,

Interested in what you were feeling that let you know that the steering bearings were toasted.

Was is roughness with weight on the front wheel or when it was off the ground?

Thanks. John

A little of both, but mostly with the weight off of the front wheel. It was quite obvious.
I tried to just clean them real good thinking that maybe it was just dried grease, but no go. I could still feel the "dings" in the races(both of them) with my fingernail.

Scott,

Thanks....

Cathy and I were 2-up for a few hours today and maybe I felt some notchy steering. Maybe it was just my imagination.

John

Well this last weekend I managed to get both sets of the Kevlar pads installed.
I installed the replacement rotors on the '95 last weekend while I was re-assembling the bike.
I also replaced the rear brake rotor on the '97 this weekend as it was well below the minimum thickness.

I did have to "adjust" the front pads with my dremel and a grinding wheel. The metal backing doesn't appear to have the same QC as the original Brembo (OEM) pads. It was a close fit. There was a rough ridge edge along the top edge where the pad rides against the caliper, part of the stamping process. Just had to smooth it out.

So far the pads stop the bike, but obviously they aren't "seated in" as yet, but only riding time will cure that.

Have a weekend trip planned to Wisc here in a couple of weeks, 2-up, so I'll give them a good workout.
