|
|
Hi all, been lurking here for ages so I hope you'll forgive my first post being a question.
I have a '92 Lt which I'm just finishing up a host of long overdue jobs on to get her back on the road. Last thing to get done is balance the injectors and set the CO.
Is there any way of setting the CO, even if it's a ballpark setting, without access to a CO meter? I've read about the "lean drop" method for K100's with L-Jetronic, but is there a similar thing that works for Motronic perhaps?
Cheers |

Welcome to the forum.
I'd like to offer some advice for you, but I can't help you there with CO settings. Most all the 1100's on this side of the pond have cat's and O'2 sensors so we don't have any settings to adjust.
Hopefully someone over in your neck of the woods can offer some advice. _________________ Ride safe.

Welcome to the forum!
I knew I had read something on this topic a long time ago. I finally found it
http://skylands.ibmwr.org/tom/tech/co-setting.html
I hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies guys.
Bill - yep that's the one I found already sadly. It only applies to the earlier L-Jetronic systems (K100 over here I think), mine has motronic but with no Cat. The adjuster is the screw on the lower left of the relay box (viewning the bike from the L/H side).
Looks like I'm going to have to try and persuade a local auto place to help me out. Shouldn't be too hard, CO emission testing is a standard component of the MOT test for most vehicles. Just thought there might be a shortcut I could do myself at home. _________________ Cheers,

Hi I've been trying to find a simple way of doing this without an analyzer for a while , All the 4v k,s I've had seem to run rich . We have no co2 plug on our bikes but have the adjustable pod here in Aus . Have been told the fuel injection will go into a safety mode if you lean it off to much, does anyone know how to tell if this has occurred and how to reset if it has .Cheers Mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

Hi Mick
Motronic Codes
0000 no further fault stored
1111 CO potentiometer
1122 Hall signal 1
1133 Hall signal 2
1215 Throttle butterfly angle sensor
1223 Engine temperature sensor
1224 Air temperature sensor
2341 Oxygen sensor at limit
2342 Oxygen sensor signal invalid
2343 mixture setting at limit
2344 Oxygen sensor shorted to ground
2345 Oxygen sensor shorted to 12V
4444 no fault stored
looks like the Motronic will read a 2343 fault code if you overdo it (haven't seen this on mine- yet). Does anyone know if this error shows in both directions, i.e. too rich as well as too lean? Might experiment with this today - if I can find the 2 limits with the codes then at least by setting half way between them i should be somewhere near, non?
Edit:
just re-read the repair manual; code 1111 shows if the emergcy run mode has kicked in due to over lean mixture. _________________ Cheers,

CO value is 1.5% +/- 0.5% at 950 rev/min +/- 50 rev/min.
Don't try to tune it without a gas analyzer, you'll get into troubles.
IMHO, ideal configuration would be an oxygen sensor and no catalyst exhaust. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

I'm sure if you waved a crinkly note under the nose of your friendly local MOT man you could have it read & set. However, before opening wallet (purse), perhaps check plugs & their gaps, exhaust pipes (headers) for leaks, inlets balanced etc. Just so you don't have to beg / spend twice. _________________ Regards Tim,

Well I managed to get an analyser stuffed up the exhaust today- popped over on the bike to book a service for the car at my favoured place rather than do it over the phone. Caught them just finishing lunch and with a few minutes spare and all it cost was a polite request. Still not 100% sure it's bang on as the idle was a bit high, and as the day was warm the engine temp rose fairly rapidly which seemed to drag the CO level with it, but wound up around 1.9% just before fan kicked in with the idle at about 1300rpm. Wrong order of work I know, but I balanced the inlets (again) afterwards and finally got the idle speed under control by resorting to tweaking the main stop screw. If I get the chance I'll get the CO double checked over the next couple of days just for my peace of mind, but it starts and runs so sweet I'll be surprised if it's far off.
Tim, everything else has been done as this is at the end of a full service and substantial works including valve clearances, cam chain kit, clutch & input shaft seal, cracked exhaust welded (discovered when removing to get the gearbox out), new battery etc etc.. after a 3 year lay-up. _________________ Cheers,

Idle is far too high. Sync your throttles, adjust idle, then tune CO. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
