I have a 1993 K1100RS that has developed a loud screaming that starts up a couple of minutes after startup. Used to be the noise started when the bike had been ridden a good bit. I'm pretty sure it's the fuel pump. Any advice on how to confirm this will be appreciated.

The next question is what else should be replaced along with the pump? From what I've seen on the forum, I'm guessing the pump is inside the tank and you have to remove the fuel filler to get it out. Are special tools needed? Does the tank have to be removed from the bike to do this?

And finally, I looked up the fuel pumps at Bob's BMW and saw the price (gasp). Also, according to them, there are 2 different kinds of pumps -- for pre-1993 bikes and for bikes BUILT in 1993 and later. How do I confirm when my bike was built?

Any and all help will be appreciated. Yes, I am definitely a K-bike newby!

Aloha,
Bill Cruise

Sounds like the fuel pump. Pull over and keep the bike running, with your spare key open the fuel cap and see if the noise gets louder and is emanating from the tank.

No special tools required, yes take the filler surround off, no you don't need to take the tank off, as for replacement see the sticky threads for cheap fuel pump replacement and fuel pump resurrection.

Cheers

Bill,

To add to drikko's post, if you need a replacement pump you might want to contact these guys.

Good service, quick response. I have ordered from them many times.

Good luck.

John

BTW, I moved your thread from Tech Resources to Tech- a more appropriate location

Probably the pump, but just an added thought, check for a plugged fuel filter. I had an 1985K that would get noisy when the filter needed changing. Remove it and you should be able to blow through it easily. An almost empty tank makes all this easier.

I have just replaced my fuel pump with a secondhand unit off Ebay for £10 which was a result. When I took the old one off I found the pre-pump filter (sock) was quite badly blocked and might have been contributing to the excess noise I was getting by starving the pump. If you're not in a hurry it might be worth buying a new sock and putting that on the old pump - that may sort it. If not I would advise a new sock anyway with whatever replacement pump you opt for.

You might need to replace some/all the following as well:

Internal Fuel Lines (must be Fuel Injection rated and submersible in gas)

Vibration Dampener (rubber surround on the pump ~$45 from BMW if I recall, but knockoffs are available also. Very old ones turn to slime in the tank, gum things up and kill pumps)

Fuel Filter

"Sock" pre-filter attached to bottom of the pump

Gas cap seal set

Most of these would definitely depend on what you find during the initial inspection, but I'd say a filter is a must if you don't know when it was last changed. As already mentioned, this might quiet the pump down in itself.

**Edited to add... You can enter the last 7 digits of your VIN here to "decode" it. It will show when your bike was made and filter for approriate parts in most cases.

Thanks guys!

I think I have most everything I need from reading your posts. I now know my '93 was actually made in 1992, so I need the older, bigger, and more expensive pump. I know that I should replace all the pieces, so I have ordered a fuel pump kit from beemerboneyard, which was also a recommendation. The kit includes the filters, vibration damper, tubing, and maybe some tank seals. Should do the job.

And about beemerboneyard: Their web site was going to make me pay $52 for 2nd day UPS. No options for USPS, which is usually the preferred way to ship to Hawaii. I emailed them and they made me on offer to mail it by air and save me over $35. Quite a deal. Lots of merchants just refuse to use USPS and make us pay triple the shipping charges. It already costs enough to live in Hawaii without having these merchants screw you. I already like these guys, and they may have made a permanent customer.

Aloha,
Bill

I live on a different big island and have the same problem except our problem is getting stuff posted internally. I bought some stuff worth about $8 from China the other day which included postage from China to OZ, I had to divvy it up and post half to my mate on the other side of town, the postage alone was going to be more than the original cost of all the stuff from China!! Rip off merchants is our Oz Post!!

Last time I went to the Big Island of Hawaii we drove right around, before the lava covered the road, must be more than 10-15 years ago I guess. Was fun playing golf in the lava fields....NOT Smile

Have done the bike ride from the observatories to the sea on Maui, always wanted to get to Kaui but have only flown across it in a helicopter...one day Laughing Laughing

At least on the big island you have a few roads to ride on!
