Hey all. Wanted to introduce myself. I wrench on Shovels and Pans as a hobby but have been interested in BMWs for a while. Pulled the trigger and will be picking up this 1996 next week. Started researching your site and others tonight. Looking forward to a change and a different project...

WELCOME! Friendly group here.

Nice looking brick. Best of luck with it. Pretty easy to work on- many here do their own maintenance and more.

Where are you located?

I am in the slowly thawing far northeast (USA)

John

I'm about an hour east/NE of Pittsburgh John. Bike is in Ohio, and I did a cursory VIN check, make sure there were no leaks, the exhaust flange wasn't cracked, the shifter wasn't loose, etc. Lots to learn about these bikes, but then again after wrenching on old Harleys for 20 years I'm ready for a change of scenery on the motorcycle lift.

As for thawing out, we're expecting ice and snow today. Ugh...

If you plan to ride any distance, you're going to hate that seat. It WILL hurt your ass.

Thanks Don. Yep, I usually do a 900-mile trip every other weekend from PA to IN. Looks like I might have to research the RDL, Corbin, and Sargent options...

I found a great aftermarket seat on the BMWMOA forum.

Drove three hours to Cleveland and test drove the bike in 20-degree weather. Threw it on the trailer, bought over $300 in filters, oil, moly lube, gaskets, etc, and now it sits in my garage with two old Harleys waiting for it's turn on the lift. Lookin forward to my BMW experience. Thanks for the input everyone!

Be careful buying a used Russel.
Those are custom made. If the guy who had it built has a lot different 'frame' (legs, weight, etc) than you, there may be problems.
Don't ask me how I know.

True,
I got lucky on mine. I would of liked a little more butt room but my wife likes the added space for her.

Gidday fellas,

Lovely bike for sure,

I was looking for an RS, but stumbled across my LT last week, the price was great so I jumped at the offer..

On the upside I now have an electric screen to play with.. WooHoo
