|
|
I have a brand new VMAX 1700 in my shop, It's my nephew in laws bike, brand new, 650 miles on it..
I had an original V-Max and it was pretty crazy fast in it's day (still is) so I was pretty curious about this new monster.
He dropped it off for me to sell it for him, as he realized it was pretty ridiculous as anything but a novelty, jail bait type item... but he said, and I quote "ride it all you want"
uh oh.
OK, let me start with a few numbers:
200 hp at the crank, 175 or so at the tire (wow)
112 feet pound of torque at the tire (our bikes are approx 88hp and 70tq to the tire)
0-60 in under 3 seconds
0-100 in about 6 seconds
1/4 mile in about 10.2
Bike weighs 690 pounds.
Now, I am old and fat and don't ride irresponsibly any longer, until I got on the Max that is.... that is why I cannot possibly own this bike, would never suggest that this bike is good for much of anything except a conversation of expletives, a stack of tickets, and possible death. (seriously)
That being said, let me describe the feeling of 200 horsepower at your right wrist, in a quiet, descreet package. Remember those scenes in Star Wars when they went into Warp Drive? The stars stretching out and redshifting? The same thing happens to your brain when you roll the throttle on this beast. Safe? not a bit. Fun? You'd have to be dead to not think so... seriously.
A quick jaunt out of my parking lot, roll on first, shift, roll on second brought me to 78 mph faster than I could remember my age and responsibility... OK, I said to myself, take this monster back and park it, no good can come from this... I didn't. Instead I rode around for a few minutes, trying my best to behave... I couldn't. So, I took it to a large industrial complex near the shop. No traffic, not a public road, large expanses of deserted concrete, where if I screwed up, it would be between the insurance company and me.
I did a mild launch, then hard through 2-4 gears, crazy.... just crazy. I had heard of the big Max's propensity to smoke the rear tire... So I tried it.. from a launch, big smoky burnouts were as easy a twisting the throttle. I did it twice, and decided I didn't want to buy him a rear tire, so I stopped. Then I tried a rolling burn-out, very few bike I have ever owned would do this. The Max will do it in a variety of gears. My favorite was 2nd, ease up to about 4500 rpm, back off a tad and a quick full twist of the right wrist, and at about 45 (educated guess here, I wasn't looking down!) the tire lit up and the bike did a very controlled burn-out... at over 50 mph. This bike is crazy easy to control while spinning the tire.. if you don't beleive me, youtube it, some very crazy videos there.
OK, like I said, I do NOT condone this behaviour, but the big VMAX is a time machine. It instantly makes you 20 years old again, maybe even 17.
I took it back, and parked it, and refuse to ride it again. It's like a junky, or an alcoholic, I can't ride this bike and remain a responsible motorcyclist. I just can't.
Afterward, the benefit was riding my K even MORE responsibly, I mean, why speed around on a slow K (compared) after you have experienced this sort of mind bending power?
Not even a zx14 or Busa can compare to the brutal acceleration of the Max... Lord help me if I ever get a ride on a BMW S1000RR, which if everything is still the same (these things change pretty quickly) is the most powerful street bike ever produced by a major manufacturer (Boss Hoss doesn't count...)
OK, hope I didn't offend the super strict riders amongst you, but I swear, I controlled myself the best I could! I swear!!
Oh, and it's for sale if any of you are silly enough to actually want to own one of these crazy things...

I LOVE the Vmax (made the mistake of pointing out to the wife that they were referred to as 'The Widowmaker') but what in the hell were they thinking when they designed the muffler on the new bikes???? _________________ 1994 K1100RS

There was a magazine over here that had an article about one of these that had been turbo'd or supercharged! I only saw the headline so haven't read it but it boggles the mind! _________________ K1100RS '97

It looks like pain waiting to happen!
So why is he selling it, with only 650 miles on it? _________________ Steve

Yep, he is selling it because he came out of his "too much income" induced insanity, looked around, and realized that he would be leaving his young wife, and 5 kids in a spot if he had an accident on this beast.
I GOTTA get it sold or at least out of my shop... it's sitting out there right now, quietly calling to me.... _________________ I am: Andrew Stanford
