As part of my extreme makeover on the RS(to be unveiled in the very near future) I had to get the mirror glass out. If you've never done this before it's important to note that you cannot pry them out or the glass will break. DAMHIK! The secret is to put a towel on a hard surface and SLAM (and I do mean SLAM) the mirror down until the glass pops out.

Also something I never noticed before: the mirror glass is ever so slightly convex.

My old glass was cracked so I had nothing to lose, I slammed and slammed, nothing. I finally went to my plumbing truck and got a handful of putty and spread it out on the mirror. One slam and the added weight did it. My plastic was really hard, otherwise it would have been easier.

You really have to slam HARD - multiple times.

Adding weight was a good idea.

Though if it's already cracked you might as well just pry it out.

Very Happy Very Happy

Hello Marlin...

You need BMW OEM Part no. 43631455000....$43.09 from MaxMotorcycles or any BMW dealer... This is the curved mirror glass that enhances side view, but diminishes size a bit.

OR, you can do what I did and go to an auto-glass shop and get a flat glass mirror mounted to the backer for less than $15 (USD ) Images in the flat glass will be larger than in the 'curved' glass, but I seem to be able to sense the actual positions of those images ( relative to me ) better than with the curved glass which is the BMW standard.

Also, do NOT lubricate the 'ball' on the backer plate. I did, and could not keep the mirror positioned properly due to vibrations and road-bumps. I then had to remove the new mirror ( slam method ) and dry the ball with alcohol before re-installing.

Advice ?? Go to the auto shop...

Good luck....// Ernie in NH
