Hi, I'm Alan. I'm from Australia, while we have other bikes there hasnt been too much time where we didnt have a K75 or K100 bike in the garage since 1989. I'm also one of those sick people that likes sidecars(no 4 now).

Currently I have an '87 K100RS fitted with HRD sidecar, it has the usual leading link front end plus 15" billet aluminium wheels with car tyres front and rear. The bike was a very low km bike when I bought it, unfortunately she's had some overheating issues and now is down on power a bit (still reliable though).

my wife leaving a rally early this year

So I've bought a '99 K1100LT (a total loss that can no longer be registerd), it has rear end damage only so is ideal for my needs to update the outfit.

The plan is to strip both bikes and fit the K1100LT motor and gearbox(68,000km) to the K100RS. I know it can be done, I'm thinking I need to swap the wiiring loom and FI computer also, possibly the 1100 switchgear. I'm not sure whether to fit the LT fairing or to leave it as an RS. I will be staying with the monolever backend.

So I have the broad plan, what I'm looking for is for anyone thats done this before, what detail bits should I be considering also?

Mechanically there is no issue, the engine attachment points are the same, the clutch is the same and the gearbox is the same except the 5th gear is a bit longer on the K11 (which is a plus) and it has an attachment point for the paralever arm. You should actually consider switching to paralever which is more reliable and you can find a longer read drive from a K1, a plus with small wheels.
Otherwise you have to switch to the K11 harness and use the K11 airbox, throttles, coils and motronic, but you can even keep the K100 exhaust (which is more reliable, the K11 exhaust often breaks at the collector soldering)

Thanks for the response. I've run a paralever before and I'd question whether it is more reliable due to the extra complexities and failure points. I will say that the sidecar handled better with the longer wheelbase the paralever gives.

With a sidecar longer gearing is not exactly an advantage. With a 15x4 rear rim I can run anywhere from a 135/80-15 up to a 165/80-15. With the existing RS gearing I am running a 145/80-15, with this size the bike still responds in top gear, with a 165 it is only good for flat highway running, I have to change down for the bike to do anything. With the exra torque from the 1100 I should be able to use a bigger tyre, that I will be trying(probably a 165/80 as they are the easiest to source). Also longer gearing means a taller first gear, that makes it harder to get the whole thing moving in the first place. With the extra weight its pulling (I have a 380kg weighbridge ticket for it) this is a consideration.

Re the muffler, I'l be running the K100 pipe anyway. The K1100 pipe (which is in very good condition) will not clear the subframe used for mounting the sidecar anyway.
