|
|
Well, I finally got the Tomtom Urban Rider and noticed quickly that with the included passive mount I cannot charge the navigator on the bike so I had to order also the active charging mount
along with the battery cable
There is no instruction included (naturally) so my electricallychallenged question is:
there are two wires in this battery cable, red and black. Is black ground and red power even nowadays? _________________ K1100LT -93 | ex K1100LT/SE -94 |

Yes you are correct.
The black wire in your adapter will be ground and the Red will be + power.
Now on the bike...... Brown is a ground wire.... _________________ Ride safe.

Don't know where you are planing on mounting yours but on my LT I made a mount that used the holes from the two dummy switches on the left side below the windshield and picked up my power from the courtesy light. I might have made an extra mount if you'r interested I can go look. _________________ K1100LT

Thanks but we have a bit of distance between us.
I was first planning to do what you described but, as usual, the time runs out - I'm due out on my trip next weekend and there are still million things to do.
The navigator came with a RAM mount and I will have to use that. Apparently it is supposed to be put on the left grip. For power I will use the outlet next to the switches. _________________ K1100LT -93 | ex K1100LT/SE -94 |

This is where I have mine installed. (I've since updated the mount for my newer gps, but it's still in the same location.)

Thanks guys.
I should get the new Ram thingy by Wednesday so it'll be sorted in time for my trip. I will after the trip install it in the upper dash with a bracket as I feel it's better tucked in there. _________________ K1100LT -93 | ex K1100LT/SE -94 |

I actually like it on the left side above the clutch - it's easy to operate there without taking a hand off the throttle. _________________ Jim

Hi . . .
I thought I'd throw in my creation for consideration . . .
I'm also the proud owner of an old Tom Tom 520 (as well as a K1100LT), which amazingly still works fine. A couple of years ago I decided that I was not going to get a dedicated SatNav for the LT . . I would make the 520 do the job.
Having already got a Starcom intercom, I looked at "plumbing" the beastie in to the i/c system. After some research and a lot of fettlin' I arrived at this . . .
I decided that the stock speakers were totally pointless as I could not hear the radio through a full face helmet without stampeding the livestock in any of the fields nearby.
Removing he speakers (rear ones as well) I plumbed the radio into the Starcom unit as well. The Waterproof bag is on a quick clip which is mounted on a handlebar mount which I have altered to fit on the blanking plates I replaced the speakers with.
I sourced a power supply for the SatNav here in the UK, and have run that through a relay, which is wired through a standard BMW fairing switch (not shown). The whole unit comes off the mount very easily and gets locked in the top box if I leave the bike parked.
I've done a two week tour in Germany and run for miles around the UK, with this arrangement, and it works fine.
The only drawback is that the screen picture is not visible in very bright sunlight from behind but I did develop a technique of shading the screen with my clutch hand. The spoken directions are fed through the intercom without any problems. I have even been able to reprogram the route whilst riding too, although it's not something I'd attempt too often.
I've done a similar thing to a helmet mounted camera, with the recording unit mounted on the right hand side speaker grille. The record button is stuck to the screen control unit on the left. That works well too.
. . . Hmm now where can I fit that anemometer ? _________________ Nick

Try a sunshade like this BTW it's an OLD picture, but the Foamex (available in art shops & bendable with heat) still protects the current PDA.
I too use the dummy switch blanks to mount things.
BTW look out for J 406 BOO, a Pine Green Metallic K1100LT, I sold that to a bloke in North Devon. _________________ Regards Tim,
