Nonono you got it all wrong. You guys drive on the right side which is the wrong side, but we drive on the right side which is the left side. All clear now?? _________________ David, owner of:

Nice vid Mickey1100
The countryside sure looks good, must be England I guess?
What do the big arrows on the road mean, overtake?
Vid came out a lil dark on my screen and the camera seemed a lil loose but otherwise a damn good lil vid and always very welcome to see on the forum.
Thank you and all the very best for the festive season |

Hi Merlin,
Ref. The large arrows on the road.
Just about the total opposite of overtake.
In the UK they form part of a hazard warning system, and if you are overtaking, tell you to return to your side of the road. See rule 128
The following is from our Highway Code (book of rules) about road markings:
Rule 127
A broken white line. This marks the centre of the road. When this line lengthens and the gaps shorten, it means that there is a hazard ahead. Do not cross it unless you can see the road is clear and wish to overtake or turn off.
Rule 128
Double white lines where the line nearest to you is broken. This means you may cross the lines to overtake if it is safe, provided you can complete the manoeuvre before reaching a solid white line on your side. White direction arrows on the road indicate that you need to get back onto your side of the road.
Rule 129
Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
I hope you all have a happy and safe New Year (especially on the roads)

Thanks Mike
Yeah the UK is full of lovely lil roads, bit like Oz but you have the benefit of so many lil folk for lots of infrastructure and an island climate.
Got some nice lil roads around here, (coastal midway between bottom and tip r/h/s Oz continent) and now that I have a camera, I will post some up too.
Might even try vid mode like you. Just have to mount it somewhere safe and rattle free.
We love vids and pics here on the forum, especially of exotic places like backwoods and mountains and deserts.
I will remember that about the large arrows
You sound like a bit of an authority on the UK road regs, I am impressed.
All the very best to you Mate and wishing you all good fun rides and safe roads from sunny downunder Oz

Hi Merlin,
We have only driven in Oz, not ridden a bike. Around Melbourne (Great Ocean Road, down to Philip Island, and around Mt Baw Baw). Also drove a bit around Sydney.
Not an authority on the rules of the road, but have been riding since 1970, so you get to pick up a few tips along the way.
