Posted: Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:53 pm Post subject: Gas Tank Parts NOT Listed on microfiche |
|
|
Good Afternoon Everyone,
Having let my bike sit for an extended period for the first time, I've unfortunately experienced first hand what gas gone bad can do to the inside of a K1100rs tank though acetone worked great cleaning everything up. I have all my parts ordered however, the two rubber strips found in the fuel pump well are not listed in the parts microfiche I have access too. Has anyone replaced these before? Mine are definitely not re-useable, I was thinking of perhaps using fuel line as a last resort.
Thanks in advance,

Unfortunately no, the two identical pieces I am referring to slide between the small gaps between the fuel pump well (not the actual pump but the well it sits in) and the side of the tank itself. One front and one rear. I never noticed them myself until now. They are each about 5in long made of rubber gasket material with a single groove running their entire length. _________________ ________________

I'd probably just use some submersible grade gas line(hose) and slit it. _________________ Ride safe.

Just what I was thinking, Scott.
BTW, looked in several places- even Motobins (UK) has nothing.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help everyone, I did end up using the specified gas submersible hose after making a slit down the middle, fit great! _________________ ________________

I've a question regarding the gas tank itself: does anyone now if RS's and LT's tanks are identical? Same number part, no difference whatsoever?
I've had a misfortune. I dropped my K after washing it in the garage. Made a big dent and a 4 inch scratch above the right-side BMW badge. I've been told to find a second hand gas tank. Mine doesn't seem to be repairable as I would wish...
Thanks in advance. _________________ Carlos

As long as you are looking at the same vintage, the tanks should be the same. _________________ Ride safe.

A friend was telling me that LT's tank looked "taller". I told him it must just his feeling, caused by the different design of the bike. Looks like I'm right.
Just wanted to be sure, since there isn't much of an offer. The one's, LT/ RS I've seen on sale also have some marks, or small dents. I have to be patient, since mine is working fine, after all.
Thanks, Scott. _________________ Carlos

I've never tried it on a gas tank, but I've had good luck with this on some golfball size dings on cars.

Out tanks are aluminum, so it should be pretty easy to pull out a ding I would think(?) _________________ Steve

Bom Gia, Karlos,
I just checked a BMW parts ETK. All K1100RS bikes use the same tank as the K75RT and K1100LT (both) with a build date after 01/93 (or, the way I believe it's written in Europe, 93/01). The price in the USA for a new tank (bare - no cap, no pump, no hoses, etc.) is USD1258.52. Good Luck! _________________ Ride Safe,

Olá Phil
Thanks for that information. It confirms what I had read, regarding the pre/ post-'93 difference.
But... USD1258.52?? New was not an option before (thought they didn't made it anymore); now, even less!
I'll settle for a second hand one, in graphite (don't know the colour code), even with a few scratches, but prefereably no dents. I've got mine already...
I hope you're doing fine, Phil. I wish you all the best for your treatment!! _________________ Carlos

Hey, nicely thought, Steve! I had seen a video about that technique a year or two ago, but I'd forgotten. I'll check my notes, to see if I saved any contacts of garages that do this. I'm not very handy... Thanks, Steve! _________________ Carlos
