Rode to Phoenix last month to see my new grand daughter. Pulled into a gas station in Wickenburg, AZ. for gas. Put the centerstand down, placed my foot on the footpad and began to lift. The footpad extension snapped off and over the bike went, hitting hard on it's right side. Still waiting for the repairs to be made, damaged the paint, broke the yellow lens in the mirror, and cracked the right side saddlebag cover.
Never had any idea this could happen, so keep an eye on that extension for cracks. Here's the culprit....
Other damage:
And yes, I had trouble with my insurance company, wanting to write the bike off as a total loss (not acceptable) but they finally researched what the bike was worth and settled my claim.
And yes, I cried on the inside when it happened.... _________________ Steven B

Had the same failure on a 1999 R1100RT. Found a replacement on Ebay and then a buddy rewelded the old back together so I then had a spare.
I did not drop the bike. The tang just basically fell off when I stood on it at the time of failure.
Never did need the spare and I gave it to the purchaser of the RT when I sold the bike.
Too bad about dropping your bike. _________________ 97 K1100LT

There is no rust by the look of the photo of the cracked piece. Looks as if it fatigued over the years and a massive cave in at the crucial stress point
They are known to rust but sheeeesh..
Sorry to see the bike knocked around by the heavy fall.
Good the insurance is paying
All the best |

I feel for you, I had a similar thing happen on a road trip, my center stand diden't break, but the bike sunk into soft asphalt and ended up on it's side with same damage as you had about $2,900 worth. Insurance paint and I fixed everything myself for about $800. This is my 3rd insurance claim for tip overs on this bike. The bike is almost paid for now. Good luck with your repairs _________________ Jim Benge, San Diego, CA.

the stress on that piece over the years must be quite high..I wonder - did they actually build these bikes thinking we would keep them for so long? I have always wondered. Certainly, they over engineered some parts for extra heavy service, but so much seems to be fragile and worn at old age..
You have probably discussed this before, but I am wondering what you all think about it.
