The temperature gauge in my 93 K11 RS is faulty. It keeps blowing a fuse.
I'll get a used one ordered from the uk... but will the fan still work if I ride in traffic ??

I'm under the opinon the gauge and sensor are not related to the fan and FIC but reading "Some water temp sensor data points." in the tech stickies, it seems to read as though the fan is controlled !!!

I had a 93 K11 LT where the temp gauge didn't work at all, and it had no effect on the fan kicking in round town, and the current LT I have has a gauge that reads very low, again with no effect on the fan kicking in.

So I don't think you'll have a problem, but it might be a good idea to find out if there is a damaged wire somewhere.

Thanks for the info.
The problem is inside the temp gauge and is intermettent.
I've fiddled about with the black plastic fitting on the back, I thought someting was shorting there.
Now if I check the gauge for shorts with my meter its fine...until I connect the plug and the gauge gets hot, feels like it could GLOW.

EDIT: Just a though here..are the temperature sender units a common thread ?? Is it feasible to buy a universal temperature gauge and sender rather than import a 2nd hand unit ??

Malcolm - yes, there are aftermarket units available that will work. There's a whole thread on here somewhere...

No worries at all to use different parts. As long as they have the same specifications - I use a VDO gauge with a BMW sensor. Basically the sensor will have a resistance of 50 Ohm at 90 C and the VDO (40-120C) needs 50 Ohm for a 90C indication. Most gauges are comparable if they have similar ranges, i.e. you couldn't use a VDO 50-150C, which are normally use for oil (IIRC 50 Ohm will then indicate 120C).

Hi All,

I seem to have managed to fix the temperature gauge.
I was unable to find an alternate gauge cheaper than buying a used one from Motorworks, so i though as the gauge is knckered I may as wel pull it apart in the hope of finding something obvious inside.

It seemed like a short was develoing inside the gaugebut I couldnt see where !!! So I cut a piece card and used it to insulate the guts to the bottom of the gauge case.

It worked and I've just done a 1300km trip over easter with no hassles.
Next tshep is to tidy up the bezel a tad and re-paint.

Thanks for the advice.
