The rear suspension unit on my K 1100 LT 1997 has a slotted screw, for damping adjustment. The slot is so messed up that I cannot move it.
Does it increase damping by turning clockwise and how many screwturns
in total are available?Does the screwhead move out and project more when turning counterclockwise? Any help appreciated.

Yes turning clockwise increases damping, cant' say how many turns total travel.
Before you spend too much time/money on it consider one of these:

I have one on my '97 and love it.
There have been quite a few of us here on this board that have purchaced one of these. Excellent quality and a very fair price.

Edit: I checked my old one that I took off of my '95. Counted 1.5 turns of travel from S to H.

How many miles/kilometers on the shock. I would suggest that an after market shock would greatly enhance your ride if the shock has more than 40K on it.

+1 for Realm Engineering RAM shock. Awesome product, and I click really does make a difference. Had mine a few weeks now and it's like having a new bike.

The old screw damping on the oem shock never seemed to make a noticeable difference.
