Who started the out and out damn lie that Italian and British motorcycles suffer from dodgy electrics? My old Nortons, Triumphs, BSA and my Ducati 996 and Laverda Jota have far, far more reliable electrics than this gawd damn poxy piece of Kraut krap K1100 LT. It is without doubt the most horrid awfull looking pile of unreliable shite ever made!
Any one here wanna buy it? 1996 K1100 LT, 77,000 miles, runs well, new everything inc' clutch, tyres, heated grips, all switches, fork seals, front stainless brake lines, etc, full panniers and topbox, radio.
Here is one person who is so pissed off with BMW bikes I will NEVER buy another! |

I'll have to pass along this gem, I forget who I heard it from. When I was trying to troubleshoot the electrical system on my 74 MZ I first encountered Lucas electrics.

Ha! That is funny. I had a '79 Triumph Bonneville for my first road bike. One day the oil light comes on. Dad (who owned British stuff since WWII) says, eh, its the switch I'll order you a new one. Puts electrical tape over the red light and I run the bike for a couple of weeks. Switch comes, I install it and and the light does not go off. Hmmm, turns out is WASN"T the electrics, but the actual oil pump was bad. Luckily I didn't seize the thing. But I did my share of cursing the Dark Price Lucas. Like the time my headlight failed in the middle of a new moon! _________________ 1997 K1100LT

As we used to call our electrics yeears ago....The Joe Lucas Joke Switches. A can of WD40 was mandatory to get home in the rain. _________________ 1993 K1100LTIC.

This is particularly funny. I've just finished fixing the cluster fuck wiring on my Laverda, never had anything wrong with the electrics on my K100 or K1100!
The Laverda on the other hand was dreadful.
But did I mention the sound of those Jota exhausts _________________ K1100RS '97

I'll offer £200 if you delivered it to Nottingham.
If it really is that bad you'll bite my hand off.?
In all my considerable years of biking, never had a problem with Uncle Joe's electrics, until last Saturday, when main beam & the warning light packed up just before the MOT test. 15 minutes later it had self repaired & still works now. It's lined up for an IBMWR K style electrical tune up.
Hey Drikko, bet my Commando Peashooters sound better than the Lanfranconi's. _________________ Regards Tim,

Obvious troll.
But the responses to OP have been great!! I loved to hate the electrics on my Triumph TR4A ... POS they were. Gotta love British Leyland and Lucas electrics. _________________ - Robert

I had a beater MG Midget for a couple of years in college. Nary an electrical problem but every bolt I tried to remove was rusted and would break off. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, All,
My first car was a 1960 3.8 litre Mk.II Jaguar saloon car. A few years later I had a Triumph TR6. I also had a 1970 and a 1973 Norton and a 1972 Dunstall-Norton 810 Mk.II. I LOVE Lucas electrics (NOT!) _________________ Ride Safe,

I had a severe problem one night in the mid nineties riding back from Newcastle to London on my "trusty" £100 CX500, twenty years old even then, burning a gallon of oil per day of couriering. I bought shares in Castrol, it was that bad. Christ, I remember one day at the workshop I asked them to do the valve clearances while they were at it, and I'll be fucked if the mechanic didn't pull me over and show me that the poor old rockers had a good 2mm of free play from side to side.. She'd definitely had a "haircut" (Replace clocks) but despite everything the poor old girl still ran well, and was still as quick off the mark and tourquey as any self-respecting CX should be.
Anyway, I'd fitted a fairing from a donor bike I'd picked up for a song, and this was the source of my trouble on my way back across eastern England. The bloody headlight fell out of its nacelle. Middle of the night in Lincolnshire with me trapsing down the A1 trying to find the damned thing. Found it, and taped it in with gaffer tape (A lesson there, I think - always carry it), and that lasted me until the poor girl got broken after a trade-in two years later.
Oh, the topic! Yeah, the alternator failed once. Still managed to push-start her for a few days till I got a second-hand item.
As for my current mistress? Apart from the "bean can" ABS finally going FUBAR last year and a non-functional heated grip, she's been golden.. She's so old though that I fear I may speak too soon.. Cross your fingers, or "druck thumbs" as they say here in Germany. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |
