several channels are running it full time here. The images of the tsunami are incredible. Interesting the wave was less than half the height of the 2004 tsunami that hit Indonesia but the difference is where it hit Japan was flat so it raced inland with more devastation and less time to escape. Fortunately I think there was also less population in the way so hopefully less deaths than 2004.
Anyway fingers crossed for them. OZ has offered rescue teams and the Japanese rescue teams that are helping in Christchurch are already on their way back.

Here too, live coverage since early morning. Truly amazing footage!
Yes, hopefully things won't be as bad as in Indonesia. Japan is "used to" earthquakes, so let's hope they have better infrastructures. The tsunami does't help, of course... Latest report I read indicated already 300 dead and 350 people missing.
I watched several moving cars being caught by the tsunami. What a tragedy! _________________ Carlos

My K1100RS fall down and break under and side panel also cracked screen.
I have never had like this M8.8 level huge shake in last 53 years after I was born. Japanese government said 300 to 400 people died now but at least 1000 people may die. I have 7 K riders whose live in near the point of earth quake and I could not hear whether they wil be safe cause most net system include phone downed. As you see on TV news, huge Tsunami struck north of Japan. Now 1am March 12 Saturday morning, most Japanese live in Tokyo will not able to sleep. All traffic system included train . airport, subway and highway are still down. So over 500000 people rocked at office or hotel through to morning. |

Hi! Glad to know you're ok!
When I heard the news and saw the images, I remembered the videos you posted while riding your K on the coast. Was that anywhere near the affected area?
Hope your friends are allright. Keep posting when you can. Best of wishes in recovering from such a huge disaster! _________________ Carlos

Our thoughts are with you yhog, at least you are OK. Hope your family and friends are too.
Bikes are fixable, people are a bit more difficult to fix.
Good luck mate. _________________ K1100RS '97

I was in work early this morning, mainly to get finished early for the weekend fun time. The computers were on and I was watching the news as this started coming in. One word I could think of was 'horrendous'.
Think its fair to say, there are a lot of people thinking of you folks going through this disaster. What more can I say!.
Take care and be safe.

Glad you are safe and sound Yhog - we have been watching the news all day of this horrific disaster. My girlfiend is Japanese-American but she has relatives in Japan and knows people near Sendai with whom she visited last year. We are hopeful they are Ok.
Best wishes to you and yours. _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

Latest official numbers: 564 dead and around 600 missing, most in the area of Sendai. Nine provinces were also hit, so fatalities are expected to rise.
I read that the tsunami wave took 20 minutes to get to shore since the earthquake caused it. In the meantime japanese authorities had some time to release alerts and evacuate some coastal areas.
May I add, Portugal's latest big earthquake was in 1755. Quite similar to this one, scientists say: estimated 8.7 followed by a tsunami that destroyed part of the capital, Lisbon. Nine hundred people died. Today, specialists recognize that we're not prepared for massive earthquakes and tsunamis. I can't (and don't want to) imagine what that would be like... _________________ Carlos

The magnitude of this is incredible.
Good to hear you're OK, yhog.
Jim Davis (Eastern Beaver) lives somewhere in the Tokyo area. I hope he's OK. I sent him an email to see how he's doing but given everything that's shut down I wonder if/when he'll get it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

We heard from my g/f friends in the Sendai area. Everything ok for them and the neighborhood they live in, which is elevated somewhat in the hills. Magnitude 9 quake and not even a window broken in their home due to the mandatory government retrofits that were required after the Kobe eathquake. Biggest problem for many up in the northern area of Japan (besides those in the path of the Tsunami of course) is that without electricity and cell service many people had no idea what was going on or how extensive the damage was. _________________ 2012 R1200RT Midnight Blue

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your sympathy. I feel some strong relations with you all.
Fortunately I found 6 K riders are safe and lives but unfortunately still one K rider missing. He lives in just behind SENDAI airport that you saw incredible flood struck and washed away everything. This morning Japanese government said 20,000 people dies at least. Another nuclear plant exploded just 20 minutes ago. But no information of Radioactive leak now.
I did not contact Jim yet but glad to he is fine.
I hope everyone in this BBS pray for Japan ! |

yhog,
The people of Japan and anyone else affected by this disaster are in our thoughts. We certainly hope that the casualty numbers are not as great as estimated. _________________ John & Cathy
