Here is a pic of how I wired my VDO gauge. I cut off the plug from the old qauge and put it on the new one. Let me know if you have any questions.

Rich,
This is too perfect. You answered my question. I will wire it up and let everyone on thread know what the result is.

Thank you

Rich,
Can you tell me if Yellow goes to "S" terminal and Green to the "+" terminal on the VDO?

Just curious: What the temperature range on a K bike? What's the temp when it's in the middle of the OEM gauge? At the red line?

I sure hope you got the damped gauge with all this effort you're putting into it...

On the VDO gauge it is about 195F when it is in the middle. My OEM gauge never wen to into the red before the fan came on. It went just past the last tick before the red before turning on. I have heard of other bikes coming on when it was in the red.

I am still trying to get a feel for how the temp is running since I put the 3 core on. The last time I rode in hot weather in the city it did not get warm enough for the fan to come on. It also cools down a lot quicker when you get going from a stop.

I have a thermostatic fan controller that I am not sure I am going to put on because the bike is running cooler with the 3 core.

All - an update on my Fuel Gauge issue---
I am unable to the the VDO gauge to work. there must be an issue with Green and/or yellow wire.
Here is what I have done so far:
1. tested the fuel sender by removing the gas cap and moving the gauge fuel sender inside the tank up and down. I am able to see the yellow instrument panel light for low fuel go on and off as tank is coming to empty and when I fill it up. That tells me that the wires (yellow and green and blue and brown) coming out of the bottom on the tank and going towards the intrument panel and fuel gauge must be working.
2. fues are all tested and working fine.

--- I have given up on the problem for now. I replaced the fuel gauge slot with Battery Volt Gauge. Next time when K goes into the shop I will have the shop track the wire all the way from fuel sender to the gauge end to see the wire is the issue.

Thank you all for helping me troubleshoot the problem.

Kamlesh

Hi,

I have the same problem and wanted to ask if anyone knows how the fuel level hardware in the tank works with both the gauge and the low level light.
I know the low level light works OK, but the gauge doesn't. Is it the same in-tank potentiometer that drives both the gauge and the light?? Just that I measure an open circuit reading on the wire that feeds the gauge as it comes out of the tank when I move the float. However, the low fuel warning is OK.

The gauge shows FULL when I short it at the tank connector so the gauge is OK.

At the moment, it looks like a break in the wire between the pot in the tank and the connector to the rest of the wiring harness.

None of the manuals/wiring diagrams I have show any detail of the actual fuel level sender itself.

Cheers,

Ray.

If I remember correctly from the last time I pulled the tank and sending unit, which was a while ago the sending unit to the gauge is a different connection than the connection of the unit to the low level warning light.

From what I can decipher from the diagrams I have:

"low fuel lamp" Power thru diode in inst cluster then thru lamp, to tank connector on white wire.

"fuel guage" Power from ing circuit (same that feed brake lights) 'grn/blk' to guage, then out on 'yellow' down to the tank connector.

Both circuits get their ground inside the tank. (from the fuel pump ground source).

For the fuel guage,
Brown is ground,
Grey/blue is the switched inst lamp power,
Green/black is the switched guage power,
Yellow the the "output" going to the sending unit.

Check the tank connector for loose/corroded connections. Others have had problems with this connector before with the fuel pump not working. The level sending unit could be just as vulnerable to the same issues.
The possibility exists also the the wire could be broken between the tank connector and the inside of the tank.

Not that I doubt how your testing the guage, but.... to state the obvious,
you have to have the ign on and the sidestand up and kill switch on, just like your riding down the road, or it won't work.
If you can turn on your brake lights when your trying to test your guage then your going about it right.

Hello gents.

I've replaced my fuel gauge with a VDO 301-015 with the 10 to 180 ohms range. It seems to be working backwards, or is it just me?

On the centerstand gauge currently registers 1/4 tank, low fuel light off. On the sidestand the gauge reads 3/8-1/2 with low fuel light on!

Wassup wit dat? Beemered BTW, the wiring is correctly configured.

You need a 301-107. 90-0 Ohm
